Section 12.3: Modeling with Linear SYstems

Objective(s): By following instructions, students will be able to: use systems of linear inequalities or inequalities to model and solve contextual problems.

explain 1A Write a system of equations to represent the situation, and then solve the system. Alexis will buy coffee and hot chocolate for her friends. Each cup of coffee costs $2.25 and each cup of hot chocolate costs $ If she pays a total of $15.75 for 8 cups, how many of each did she buy?

explain 1B Write a system of equations to represent the situation, and then solve the system. Melanie is buying pens and markers for school. Packs of pens cost $2.75 each and packs of markers cost $3.25 each. IF she bought a total of 6 packs and spent $17.50, how many of each did she buy? Create a table to organize the information.

Your-Turn #1 Write a system of equations to represent the situation, and then solve the system. Downey High School has to buy computers and printers. Each computer costs $550 and each printer cost $390. If Downey High School spends $8160 and buys a total of 16 machines, how many of each did it buy?

explain 2A Write a system of inequalities to represent the situation, and then solve the system. Alex is buying T-shirts and shorts. T-shirts costs $14 and shorts cost $21. He plans on spending no more than $147 and buy at least 5 items. Show and describe all combinations of the number of T-shirts and shorts he could buy.

explain 2B Jose has to buy two different kinds of action figures to put in his nephew’s party favors. Each Superman action figure cost $.60 and each Batman action figure cost $.90. Jose needs to buy at least 15 action figures, but he wants to spend no more than $18. Show and describe all combinations of the number of action figures of each type Jose can buy.

Revisit Objective(s):
Did we... use systems of linear inequalities or inequalities to model and solve contextual problems?
