6 What is energy? Describe everything you know about energy in 30 words.

7 Energy is the ability to do work
Energy is the ability to do work. Without the ability to obtain and use energy, life would not exist.

8 Most of the energy on Earth comes from the sun in the form of light.

9 All the energy that comes to Earth leaves in the form of heat.

10 In between, energy can be trapped by living systems and can be used to do biological work.

11 Energy comes in many forms
Energy comes in many forms. Some of them include: light, heat, sound, electricity, and chemical compounds.

12 To live, all organisms, including plants, must release the energy stored in sugars.

13 Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the principle chemical compound that cells use to store and release energy. ATP consists of three parts: adenine, a three-carbon sugar called ribose, and three phosphate groups.

14 The three phosphate groups are the key to ATP’s ability to store and release energy.

15 Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is a compound that looks almost like ATP, except that it has two phosphate groups instead of three.

16 Cells store small amounts of energy by adding a phosphate group to ADP molecules producing ATP.

17 The energy stored in ATP is released by breaking the chemical bond between the second and third phosphates.

18 Because ATP is ready to power the machinery of the cell it is often compared to a fully charged battery.

19 Cells can regenerate ATP from ADP as needed by using the energy stored in foods like glucose.
