1 Seed Structure and Function The Anthophyta (angiosperms) are the largest phylum or division in the plant kingdom. The two classes of Anthophyta are monocotyledons and dicotyledons.

2 Monocotyledons (monocots) Monocots have one seed part (cotyledon) that cannot be split. Examples are corn, grass and wheat

3 Dicotyledons (dicots) Dicots have two seed parts (cotyledons) that can be split in two. Examples are peas, beans and maple tree seeds.

4 The seed is important because it contains the embryo that becomes the new plant or sporophyte. Many seeds are a major source of food for humans and animals. Corn, wheat and rice are seeds that are used for food by people all over the world.
