Balanced and Unbalanced Forces By: Abhinav Kopalle

Forces Balanced and Unbalanced Forces Starter (10 mins): 1)What is air resistance? 2)Explain why a parachute can slow a skydiver down. 3)How do we measure forces? 4)Why do you slip on ice?

Learning Intentions Learning Intentions: 1)Using examples can you explain what is meant by a balanced force? 2)Using examples can you explain what is meant by an unbalanced force? 3)Describe how balanced and unbalanced forces effect the movement of objects

Forces What are the forces acting on this rocket? Thrust GravityAir Resistance In terms of forces why does the rocket take off?

Forces Are these three forces balanced or unbalanced? Mmmm! What do you think?

Forces What would happen if gravity was the biggest force?

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces If the forces acting on an object are the same size but acting in opposite directions, they will cancel each other out. The forces are balanced. The object will not move or be moving at a constant speed. If one force is bigger than the other, the object they are acting on speeds up, slows down or changes direction. The forces are unbalanced Balanced Unbalanced

Balanced and Unbalanced forces In terms of balanced and unbalanced forces explain why: (i)the helicopter hovers (ii)the rocket rises Answer in sentences and name the forces acting on the objects at the top. (In your study book)

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces What are the forces acting on this cup? Are they balanced or unbalanced? The cup is pulled down by gravity The table pushes back up The size of these forces are equal, therefore the cup does not move. The forces are balanced

Tug of War! List all of the forces that are at work during a tug of war. In terms of forces describe why one team will win

Balanced or Unbalanced Forces? Task: Complete your worksheet then show me Time: 10 mins

Extension: Complete these questions in full sentences 1)What happens to the speed of an object when: (a)No force acts on it? (b)All the forces acting on it are balanced? 2) Draw a picture of a moving car and show the forces acting on it (use different sized arrows to show the size and direction of the forces). 3) Describe in terms of forces what will happen when: (a)the accelerator is pressed (b)the brake is pressed

Learning Intentions Learning Intentions: 1)Using examples can you explain what is meant by a balanced force? 2)Using examples can you explain what is meant by an unbalanced force? 3)Describe how balanced and unbalanced forces effect the movement of objects
