Practical: Blogging Guide Your First Step to Creating a Blogger Blog
7
Choosing a Blogging Platform FREE or PAID? PAID (Custom Domain) www.myname.com FREE (Free Custom Domain) www.myname.blogspot.com www.myname.blogspot.com www.myname.wordpress.com www.myname.wordpress.com
8
As a Newbie Blogger, Choose the Free Platform WHY? Starting with a free platform offers you the convenience to move on the journey of blogging without the undue pressure of breaking even that comes when one has spent money on custom domain and possibly hosting. With free platform, you take it easy and systematically learn the rope. By the time you discover that people are taking interest in the ideas you share, you can go ahead to prove a point by paying for a custom domain for your blog. Moreover, I recommend the Blogger platform
9
WHY BLOGGER? Blogger is a blogging platform owned by Google. While there are many other wonderful blogging platforms out there, chiefly Wordpress, Blogger offers some uniqueness that makes it the right choice for newbies. Let’s compare Blogger and Wordpress.
10
Blogger.com vs Wordpress.com Blogger offers easier and instant set up. Blogger offers unlimited disk space. Wordpress offers only 3GB for free users. Blogger allows you to attach videos to your blog. Wordpress doesn’t allow free users do that. To change your free domain to custom domain, you only need to buy a domain with Blogger. But for Wordpress, you need both domain and hosting
11
Blogger.com vs Wordpress.com With Blogger, your site is already visible with Google search engine. Wordpress can shut down your site at the least mistake, but not blogger. You can easily make money with Blogger as a free user, but never with Wordpress. Google Adsense works with Blogger.com (free user), but not with Wordpress.com (free user).
12
THE JOURNEY NOW STARTS --- CREATING YOUR FIRST BLOGGER BLOG
13
Gmail Account is a MUST! Basic Requirements
14
..Blogging basics By Mr Chima Ezuo The Work Begins Type Blogger.com On your web browser
15
The below dialog box you’ll likely see if your Gmail account is not logged on, when you type in blogger.com in your browser. So, you have to log in first or sign up for a Gmail account if you have none, as blogger works only with Gmail, having the same parent company, Google.
16
NOW ON THE BLOGGER DASHBOARD… CLICK ON THE ‘NEW BLOG’ BUTTON TO START A dialog box will appear…
17
What do you do with this?
18
Filling up the gaps… o Three things stand out from the above o dialog box: Title Address Theme What are they and how do we fill them?
19
Dealing with Blog Title Title here means the name you wish to give your blog site, which must always reflect what you want to write about. For instance, if you want to blog about tips on how to use technology effectively in the classroom, your title could be anything Tech Classroom, Classroom Technology Tips, Teacher Teach Tech etc. These are possible suggestions, provided no one has used it.
20
Dealing with Blog Address Web address here refers to the internet address of your site. This is what people type on the web browser to gain access to your site. Something like www.myname.com.www.myname.com Note: it is always good to tie your web address to your site title. Using the above example, it should be something like, www.techclassroom.com or http://techclassroom.com. They are just same. Meanwhile, because you are using a free blogger platform, you will notice an extension… ‘blogspot.com’ when you type in your desired web address, making your address to appear like this: http://techclassroom.blogspot.com.www.techclassroom.comhttp://techclassroom.comhttp://techclassroom.blogspot.com If someone else is using the address you’ve chosen, blogger will inform you that address is not available, requesting you choose another one different. In that case, you may choose say, http://techintheclassroom.blogspot.com. All you’re trying to do is having a unique name that is still attached to your blog title. http://techintheclassroom.blogspot.com
21
Dealing with Blog Theme Another name for theme here is template. This has to do with the interface design of your blog site. Blogger has many default template you can quickly choose from as you create your blog site. Remember, you can always change it any time you like, so don’t be bothered for now. Just choose anyone of them and then create your new blog site.
