COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN PHARMACY INTRODUCTION:- A computer is a device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logic operations automatically according to instructions written in a software. Conventionally, a computer consists of at least one processing element, typically central procesing unit(CPU) and some form of memory.The processing element carries out arithmetic operations in the responce to stored informed. onic Order Entry

WHY COMPUTER IS IMPORTANT IN THE FIEND OF PHARMACY.....? The computer has become a very common tool in all areas of science and technology. With the proliferation of the internetand the developements in computers technology and manufacturing, the ratio of the price to perfomance of the computers has continued to decreased. This has resulted in the developement of the number of computer applications.

Basically the use of the computers in pharmacy fields was get started from the year:-1980 There is a great demand of computer in pharmacy field. The field of pharmacy has immensely benefited by theuse of computer and will continue to benefit as the pharmacist’s gain more familier with computer.

Some of the important areas where the computers are useful in the new drug discovery, drug design, analysis, manufacturing of the drugs and hospital pharmacy. Other than these computers are helps to the pharmacist collaborate with the other profeddionals, which is essencial in the researsh work. It is also provides solutions the solutions for the time consuming the manual task. Various hardware and softwares have been developed without which drug discovery, and for designing, manufacturing and analyzing would become virtually impossible. The most important fact is that will enable is to discover new drugs for the complete care of the dangerous diseases and reduce the cost of production of the diseases which are easily cured. The computers are also useful for the hospital pharmacist and in the telemedicine. A lot has been done and a still has to be done for improving the computer facilities for pharmacist. Here are some important applications of computer in the pharmacy.

APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTERS IN PHARMACY 1.Prescription filling:- Pantient name, doctor name, drug name, quantity, prescriptionnumber, prints the lable, calculate the price, discount,etc. 2.Prescription Refilling:- pharmacist enter data regarding the prescription if data not available to avoid any warning message appears if the prescription is out of data. 3.E-prescription:- E-prescriptions are computer- generated pescriptions created by the healthcare provider and sent directly to the pharmacy. E- prescriptions are sent electonically through a private, secure, and closed network.

E-Prescriptions are classified into three types they are:- I.Fast:- Your prescription arrivesat your pharmacy before you leave your doctor’s office. II.Convenient:- You don’t have to make that extra trip to drop pff your prescription at the pharmacy. III.Legible:- There is no handwriting for the pharmacist to interpret. IV.Economical:- Makes it easier for the pharmacist and also for your doctor to prescribe the most cost effective medications based on the patient’s insurence coverage.

Prescription Processing:- prescription processing is invaribly one of the main activities going on within a pharmacy on a day to day basis,and computers are used to make this process more reliable and efficient. Both the customer service side of the pharmacy operation ande the dispencing aspect are today carried out through the use of computing systems. Pharmacy computers also handle customer service activites such as sales and cash handling within the retail operation. 5. Patient Counciling:- Pharmacist can print counciling handout, prescription lable and invoice. Also handout contains any information the patient might need to know regarding precautions or side effectsd of the medications. 6. Patient Profile:- Pharmacist can update patient profile whenever a new prescription is filled. Also if the patient might have any symptoms like allergies,it should be added to the patient ‘s profile.

7. Drug_drug interactions: There is program regarding this point, this provieded from many vendors offer programs for drug interaction. The pharmacist must chek the patient’s profile and prescription to determine if there is interaction. 8. Information:- Having access to the Web via pharmcy computers is something that has enhanced the ability of pharmacists to carry out their duties to a higher standard. As well as giving the pharmacy staff access to the vast store of information that is available on the Internet, including those on the specialist pharmacy resources, Internet connects pharmacists to their peers on a global scale. 9. Database:- Computer database system information about medicines, and medical treatment in general, are used within pharmacies.
