Instructions by Hon'ble Prime Minister said, anyhow replace to traditional burnt brick at construction work. She also said that the feasibility of making with sands obtainable through river dredging has to be explored & experimented. Initiative should be taken to make eco-friendly bricks by using the acquired sands/sedimentary soils at the same time.
4
Hon'ble Housing & Public Works Minister said, the use of Burnt Bricks stopped in the construction work. On the other hand, Hon'ble National Professor Dr. JRC sir said, we are continuing with the guidance of the 25-years old BNBC. This is the green age book of the world records. He also said that, in many countries it can be changed after 5-years, we have to change the BNBC of 1993 & do it again. But recently in 2011 the initiative was taken but it was not implemented yet.

Availability of Dredging Soil to Produce Eco-Friendly Building Materials: Bangladesh Perspectives. Objective of the Study: The prime objective is the evaluating the availability of dredged sands & sedimentary soil for the production of building materials as alternative to traditional brick in Bangladesh. Promote and commercial use of alternative way to replace traditional burnt brick to protect our agricultural land and reduce environmental pollution are additional objectives.

Figure 1: Facilities of alternative building materials

About 6,740 brick kilns in Bangladesh: The brick are producing brick by using……………. 45 million tons of agricultural top soil. 3.5 million tons of coal. 2 million tons of wood. Harmful for agricultural land. Pollute environment drastically and Reduce forestry significantly. Recommendation: I think that, the alternative to traditional fired brick now is the demand of time in Bangladesh. Sediment deposited in 24000 km of waterways may be the prime raw material of alternative to burnt brick. References: 1.BWDB & 2.BIWTA

There are some Eco-Friendly Building Materials: a.CSEB Interlocking Brick. b.Compressed Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB). c.Thermal Block. d.Concrete Hollow Block. e.Fly Ash Brick. f.Ferro-Cement. g.Sandwich walls & panel.
9
CSEB Interlocking Block: Raw materials: 45% Dredging sand. 45% Soil. 10% Cement Sample Kapotakkho dredged soil & Dhaka Soil Physical Properties of CSEB: Size =12″x6″x6″ Density = 2200-2300kg/m 3 Compressive stress = 7-8 MPa ( 1000-1150 psi ). Water Absorption = 15-20% Price BDT. 14/Ps. Advantages of CSEB Interlocking Block: Savings in construction materials. Construction without making use of mortar. Saves time in the construction process. Low cost construction & Sustainable due to no emit CO 2.

Compressed Stabilized Earth Block (CSEB: Raw materials: 45% Dredging sand. 45% Soil. 10% Cement Sample Kapotakkho dredged soil & Dhaka Soil Physical Properties of CSEB: Size =9.5″x4.5″x3″ Density = 1600-2000kg/m 3 Compressive stress = 5-6 MPa ( 725-870 psi ). Water Absorption = 15-20% Price BDT. 14/Ps. Advantages of CSEB Interlocking Block: It reduces the risk in food security by sparing agricultural lands. Cost effective & being eco-friendly. Terminates the use of forest resources. Using dredging soil thereby keeping the rivers & canals flowing. Sustainable due to reduced the emission of CO 2. Fire resistant - non-combustible with excellent fire resistance properties.

The soil preparation&pressing operation can be best described by the pictures below:

Benefits: Light weight, easy to handle Low thermal conductivity & low water absorption. Weather resistant with excellent insulation and low moisture absorbency. Acoustic benefits and CFC free. (CFC= Chloroform Carbon) Environmental friendly materials due to not presence Ozone (O 3 ) depleting gases and uses no chloroform carbons (CFCs). The foam walls and roof are quickly trowel or sprayed with a thin layer of concrete OBJECTIVES: EPS (Expanded Polystyrene Sheet) The objective of the project (EPS) is sustainable due to reduced the CO 2, economical due to less cost comparison to brick and eco-friendly in the field of construction. Besides this project focus on using EPS foam as alternative building construction material and so on. Image: EPS Sandwich walls/panel

Advantages of Fly Ash Bricks: Saves Construction Cost Less Water Seepage and Dampness in wall Less Energy Consumption Reduction in Air Pollution High compressive strength. Low water absorption. Dimensional accuracy through uniform shape. High strength to weight ratio. No emission of green house gases during production. Zero efflorescence.
