Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Functionalist Perspective: 1. Emphasizes the way that parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability 2. Durkheim, Weber

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Functionalist Perspective: 1. See society as a vast network of interconnected parts 2. Each part helps to maintain the system as a whole

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Functionalist Perspective: 1. If a particular aspect of social life does not contribute to society’s stability or survival- it serves no identifiable useful function 2. If there is no function, it will not be passed on to the next generation

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Functions: 1. Manifest functions – open, stated, conscious functions 2. Involve the intended, recognized consequences of an aspect of society.

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Functions: 1. Latent functions – unconscious, unintended functions 2. May reflect the hidden functions of an institution

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Dysfunctions: 1. Dysfunction – refers to an element or a process of society that may actually disrupt a social system or lead to a decrease in stability.

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) Conflict Perspective: 1. Assumes that social behavior is best understood in terms of conflict or tension between competing groups. 2. Ex.: Marx

Major Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1) The Marxist View: 1. When studying a group, sociologists look at who benefits, who suffers, who dominates at the expense of others. 2. Interested in how institutions maintain privilege for some, and keep others subservient
