Initially the wines made in USA were not of very good quality. On 24 th May 1976 at a blind tasting in Paris, the California Chardonnay & the Cabernet Sauvignon wines were judged as good wines similar to the wines produced in France. Most Californian wines are named after the grapes used in winemaking. For e.g.- Chardonnay Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT

95% of the crops are cultivated in California, 2 % in New York, 2 % in Washington & some 1.2 % in the other states. In 1978 a form of appellation known as AVA (Approved Viticulture Areas) was concealed. There are 2 qualities of wine made in the USA Premium Wines. Table wines. Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT

Premium Wines – They are best quality wines produced in the USA. The important wine producing regions of USA are – California – The Napa Valley, Santa Barbara & Sonoma valley. New York – Hudson River Valley, Long Island. Washington Dragon Texas Maryland Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT

The Australian wines are normally a blend of 2 or more grape varieties. The Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon are the main white grapes. Red wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Hermitage, Shiraz, & Malbec. In 1972 the South African government was eager for international acceptance for their wines and so introduced an elaborate system of control for ‘Wines of Origin’, which is similar to European country regulations. It is only since the late 1980’s that has enough healthy wines of first rate varieties have been available to judge how good their wines can become. Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT

The principal red wine grape variety Cinsant is used in the making of better wines in South Africa than in the south of France. Other grape varieties – pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Riesling. Before 1970, only interested locals knew that good red & white wines could be made both near Auckland & along the east coast North Island. During these days, the country had less than 1000 acres of vineyards mainly near the north of Auckland. By 1980 here were 14,000 acres of vineyards. Bull’s Blood The most famous of the red wines is the Bull’s Blood also known as Egri Bikaver. It comes from vineyard aroung Egri and is produced from at least three grape varieties. Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT
