The application system was created in 1935 to protect the authenticity of wines & livelihood of producers. Nowadays the making and labeling of French wines is controlled by European Union(EU) under the following definitions: Vin de qualite produits dans des regions determinees –VQPRD: These are quality wines produced from grapes grown in specific regions. They are sub-divided into 2 categories: 1. Vins d’ appellation d’ origine controle: AOC: Subjected to the strictest control of the French wine laws. 2. Vins delimite de qualite superieure: VDQS: They are produced from approved vines cultivated according to specific codes. The grapes have to be grown within limited periods. Vins de Table: is also divided into two: 1. Vins de Pays:(VP) They are local or country wine linked to a department and alcoholic strength is not less than 8.5 GL and come from the locality stated on the label. 2. Vins de consummation courante: (VCC) Wines for everyday consumption and may be sold by the glass, carafe or pitcher in cafes and bars all over France. A blend of ordinary wines. Bordeaux is probably the most well-know wine region in France. Bordeaux counts for one third of the good quality french wine (AOC, crus bourgeois, crus classés). The wines are so good there that a Bordeaux ranking is needed to classify the best of the best. Some of them are universal: Margaux, Yquem, Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion and all the others. Bordeaux has about 7,000 chateaux !BORDEAUX

Few of the most exciting wines in the world come from Burgundy. The Burgundy region begins a hundred kilometers south from Paris and spreads itself down to Lyon. It stretches on 360 kilometers (225 miles). Burgundy is a region with various soils, divided in numerous districts: Chablis, Côte d'Or (divided in Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune), Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Beaujolais. Valley Wines The Loire Valley is famous for its white wines. None of them use Chardonnay as a main grape variety. Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon are widely used. About 75% of the production is made of white wine. Although Loire is a land of white wine, some red wines are very interesting. They are fruity and pleasant. Appellation… Contrôlèe (AOC): The word(s) appearing between these two words on the label indicate the official place-name of the wine, the location where the grapes grew. Blanc de blancs ("white from whites"): A white wine made from white grapes only. In particular, Champagne made exclusively with Chardonnay grapes. Blanc: White Brut: A dry sparkling wine Château: A wine estate Crèmant: An AOC sparkling French wine from some region other than Champagne. Cru: A vineyard, a village, or sometimes a wine estate Cuvée: A blend of wines, or a particular batch of wine Domaine: Wine estate, usually a smaller property than a Château. Grand cru: A region's highest quality vineyard or vineyard area Grand vin: A winery's best vin Millèsime: Vintage (year of the harvest) Mis en bouteille au château: Estate-bottled Premier cru: A top vineyard area or wine estate, but less prestigious than a grand cru Reserve: Suggests a better-quality wine, but it's an unregulated term that anyone can use for any wine. Rouge: Red Sec: Dry Vielles vignes: Old vines, suggests better quality, but it's an unregulated term. Vins Délimités de Qualité Supérieure (VDQS): A place-name wine that's less prestigious than an Appellation… Contrôlèe wine Vin de Pays: A French country wine; the words following this phrase on the label indicate the zone where the grapes grew.
