What is Value/s? - Values are personal perceptions of one’s own future, relatively of the family, works, friendship, group, community and nation as a whole. - They converge in one culture and form sets of attitudes and behaviors observed among members. - These are practices which have become part and parcel of our culture. - Values sprout anywhere as living, for example one’s culture and tradition. - In Philippines, values for things held dear are sources of status symbols, like wealth, economic status, authority, politics, and even personal ambition. - “Our values are behind all our human goals”

Theoretical Framework for Values Development Concepts involve: 1. Human values as ideals which determines our priorities and direct behaviors. 2. Human ideals as they reflect different levels of needs. 3. Human pursuit for the ultimate and highest values as they relate to the spiritual nature of man. 4. Human desire much of which is unconscious. 5. Human ideals as pursued individually and collectively.

Human Values, Priorities and Behaviors Question: On what concerns do you spend considerable amount of time and energy? According to Psychologist Brian Hall (1994) who has been doing research on human values for more than 25 years, human values cover a spectrum of ideals which comprise the basic element that stand behind all human behavior. He also define VALUE as the ideals that give significance to in our lives and reflected through the priorities that we choose and that we act on consistently and repeatedly. These ideals are what we considered to be important and desirable.
5
These ideals mediate between our inner world images, hopes and dreams, on one end and the external world of what can be observed everyday in our behavior, on the other. These values, therefore, determine our priorities in the decisions we make and the actions we choose. It is important to make a distinction between Cognitive values and Action values. Example of value ideals we commonly share with other; Honesty, Integrity, Kindness, Being others-oriented and many more Note: Not all these following value ideals can be pursue as our priority because some of this does not take shape as part of our distinguishing characteristics.
6
Cognitive Values - It can be Spiritual value or/and Moral values, which includes faith, hope, love, human welfare, justice and fairness. Action Values - Values that determine our priorities in the decisions that we make and the actions that we choose repeatedly and consistently. - Direct choices and those evident in our day-to-day life.
7
Human Ideals Reflect Different Levels Of Needs According to Maslow (1993), there are at least (5) sets of goals related to the basic needs of a person; 1. Physiological Needs 2. Safety Needs 3. Love and Belongingness Needs 4. Esteem Needs 5. Self-Actualization
