EXTINCT AMPHIBIAN PRESENTED BY- RAMU VERMA CLASS – M.Sc. ZOOLOGY II SEM DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY SHIA P.G. COLLEGE LUCKNOW

INTRODUCTION Extinct Amphibian are ectodermic tetrapods vertebrates of class Amphibian. The earliest amphibian evolved in the Devonian period from sarcopterygian fish with lungs and bony limbed fins. The large size living amphibian is Chinese giant salamander [Paedophryne amanuensis] measures about 1.8 meters but it is dwarfed by extinct Amphibian 9 m[30 ft].

STEGOCEPHALIA All extinct group of Amphibian are placed under a single order Stegocephalia. Order1- Labrynthodontia Order 2- Phyllospondyli Order 3- Lepospondyli

Labrynthodontia Oldest known tetrapods called stem Amphibian. Freshwater or land forms. Salamander or crocodile like. Teeth large with characteristically much folded dentine similar to their crossopterygian ancestors. Example – Eryops

Eryops

ERYOPS Eryops is an extinct Amphibian which live approximately 295 -270 million years ago, during the Permian period. Body was lizard like giant animal. It was 5 ft long and weighed about 200 pounds. It was a biggest amphibian of that time.

Phyllospondyli Small salamander like. Head large, flat. Vertebrae tubular. Notochord and spinal cord housed in common cavity. Believed to be ancestors of modern salientia and urodela. Example - Brachiosaurs

Brachiosaurs

BRANCHIOSAURS Branchiosaurs meaning- Branchios – Gill, Sauros- Lizard. These are the genus of small, lightly built early PREHISTORIC AMPHIBIAN. Fossils have been discovered in the Permian Period.

Lepospondyli Small salamander or eel like. Vertebrae cylindrical, each made of a single piece. Neural arch and Centrum continuous. Ribs articulating intervertebrally. Regarded ancestral to modern caecilians. Carboniferous to Permian. Example – Diplocaulus, Lysorophus.

Diplocaulus

Diplocaulus is an extinct genus of Leposondyli Amphibian from the Permian period of North America. It is one of the largest Lepospondyls, with a distinctive boomerang shaped skull. Diplocaulus have been found to Late Permian period of Morocco and represent the youngest known occurrence of a Lepospondyl.

Lysorophus

LYSOROPHUS LYSOROPHUS were small salamander like amphibian. They lived in fresh water, aestivating in burrows during dry periods. Lysorophus were found in Permian of North America
