What is a board game? It is a game played with counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across a “board”.

Historical facts As we’ve seen, games have been played in most cultures and societies throughout history for as far back as we can remember. EX: Senet. The Egyptian game believed to be the oldest board game was found in a tomb dating back to BC!

Historical Facts Board games did not become widely popular among the general population until the early 20th century (1900s). Popularity really took off after WWII

Types of board games There are many different categories of board games Dice Adventure Educational Historical War However, we will focus on two specific types – those that simulate life, and those that attempt to simulate aspects of life. -Number -Trivia -World -Sports -Memory -Environmental -Humor -Party games -Puzzle -Zombie

Types of board games Many games define their main purpose as to simulate real life, or specific aspects of real life: Monopoly Life Mystery Date Pay Day

Other games only attempt to imitate reality. These games may include: Abstract strategy games Chess, Checkers, Connect 4, Mancala, Backgamon Word games Scrabble, Bananagrams, Balderdash

Game Components There are many components in a board game that must be decided in order to make the game work. Game Purpose/story Scoring/Winning Board Design Movement Mechanics Pieces (Size shape color etc.) Additional Materials (Ex: Trivia Cards)
