1 Reading Parent Workshop

2 Reading Main focus- flow and fluency (rather than decoding).
Practise words that need decoding (these could be sent home on a post-it) Practise reading the Common Exception words- these need to be automatically recognised. (Red Home School Links book- page 32) Adult scan the sentence then use the picture to ask leading questions to enable your child to recognise the word. Ask your child to point out these words in the sentence. Tell your child the difficult words.

3 Reading You may need to draw attention to suffixes eg – ing, -ed when discussing the picture children may say playing but the sentence may say played. If your child says a word that is in context but not necessarily the word allow your child to read on rather than breaking the flow- when you have finished reading return to this word and explain. Echo reading- this will encourage both fluency and expression. Over exaggerate when reading with expression. Ask questions- direct from the text and inference. Direct from the text- What is ________ doing? What colour is? Inference- How do they feel? Why are they doing? Experience- Have you ever? What would you do? Prediction- Where will they go next? What do you think will happen next?

7 Phase 2 and Beyond! Parent Workshop

8 What is phonics? 44 Phonemes (sounds)
120 Graphemes (ways of writing sounds) At Knypersley we teach these through a programme called ‘Letters and Sounds.’ Letters and Sounds has 6 phases. Each phase sets out the graphemes/phonemes that children will learn (please see your sound mat). Each phase also has a set of common exception words (sometimes referred to as tricky words).

9 Pronunciation is important!
If you are unsure of how to correctly pronounce a phoneme, you can look to the internet for help. Youtube has lots of good videos to help but be very selective. Mr Thorne Does Phonics Jolly Phonics Oxford Owl home/reading-owl/expert-help/phonics-made- easy/

10 Learning to Recognise Graphemes
Each phase has a set of graphemes that the children will learn to recognise. Begin with set 1 and increase as the children learn each set. Grapheme hunt- can you find p? Matching graphemes with pictures. Writing graphemes in sand, shaving foam etc. Look for graphemes in the environment. Making graphemes with duplo, soft dough etc.

11 Blending Children need to practise blending using the sounds in each phase. Children may benefit from using sound buttons or pointers. VSF4

12 Pat a dog. A red bag. Application
Children are to practise reading simple captions. Pat a dog. A red bag.

13 Segmenting and Writing
Children use their segmenting skills to write words using the sounds in each phase. Children can begin by making words with magnetic letters/letter cards before moving on to writing words. Children can use a sound mat to help them. Please refer to the letter formation/Pen Pals Pitter Patter support materials.

14 High Frequency Words Children learn to recognise the 100 High Frequency Words (these can be found in your child’s Home School Links book). These are very common words that the children need to recognise by sight (without sounding out).

15 Common Exception Words
Children learn to recognise Common Exception Words. These are very common words that the children need to recognise by sight. They cannot be sounded out by applying phonic rules e.g. the, to, no. Please refer to your word mats to find out which common exception words your child needs to learn for their current phase.

16 Year 1 Phonics Screening
In June, all Year 1 children will take the Phonics Screening test. They will read 40 words- 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. Children can sound out the words before blending. These can be practised on Phonics Play- Obb and Bob. These real and nonsense words are practised every week in Year 1 to prepare the children for the test.

17 Using Apps Check the pronunciation of phonemes is correct.
Stay away from apps that ask children to spell using capitial letters. Twinkl phase apps (light version is free but can upgrade to unlock more features) Mr Thorne Alphablocks Geraldine’s Phonics Land (99p)
