2 Do Now! Imagine your parents and/or guardians decided to move in the middle of the school year and you were a new student. Using some character traits you are familiar with and/or looking at the character traits sheet, how would you feel if this were you?

3 Today’s Lesson Today we will be reading a book titled Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson. As I am reading, pay close attention to the main characters in the story (Maya & Chloe). Think about how they treat each other and how other characters in the story treat them. Also, think about the conflict and the resolution of the story.

4 Purpose It is important to always set a purpose for reading.
What is your purpose for reading the book Each Kindness?

5 Let’s Start Reading! Make sure you are paying attention and following along!

6 Conflict What was the conflict of the story?
Chloe was negatively influenced by her peers and did not treat Maya nicely. Maya was a new student and was bullied by all her peers. She tried making friends but no one gave her a chance. Chloe gave in to peer pressure.

7 Character Traits What are some character traits used to describe Chloe? Mean, hurtful, cold-hearted, cruel, scared, impolite What are some character traits used to describe Maya? Friendly, courageous, gentle, independent, persistant

8 Character Motives Why did Chloe act the way she did? If you were Chloe, how would you have acted? Chloe was negatively influenced by her peers. Maya was different (she was poor/had different interests) and Chloe did not want to be associated with her in public. Chloe worried too much about what other people thought of her.

9 Resolution How did the story end/was the conflict resolved? How did the ending of the story make you feel? Maya’s family suddenly moved away, so she never went back to school. Chloe felt guilty for her actions and wish she treated Maya differently. Chloe could not think of any kind things she did for Ms.Albert’s assignment.

10 Activity What are some ways we can show kindness in everyday life?
Brainstorm a list of six ways you can show kindness to others. Write these acts of kindness on your outline. This week, challenge yourself to practice these ideas. Color/decorate your outline. Make sure you put your name on the top!
