1 Technology Orientation 2015
October 13, 2018

2 Welcome! Agenda What to Do BEFORE You Get to Campus
Wired vs. Wireless Network Info Connecting to IU Wireless Network Connecting to IU Wired Network Printing at IU as a Kelley Grad Student Tips to Optimize Network Performance Technical Support Options 10/13/2018

3 What to Do BEFORE You Get to Campus
Go to to obtain FREE software IU Printer Finder (Mac users – see the requirements comment about local username) IU Secure Setup Tool System Center Endpoint Protection 2012 (Mac) MS Office 2013* Adobe Acrobat* or Foxit Reader Microsoft Security Essentials* * Some (Microsoft and Adobe) products may not be available for download until August 1st 10/13/2018

4 Wired Is Always Faster Wired connectivity at IU will always provide the best network experience available. While not as sexy as a wireless connection, wired provides a dedicated, “full speed” type of connection. Wireless will always come in second when comparing connection speeds. 10/13/2018

5 Wireless Overview Wireless access is shared access. The more devices connected to a single Wireless Access Point (WAP), the more performance degrades (slow downloads, failed print jobs, inability to connect to any Internet resources, etc.) The connection will also be INTERMITTENT!! 10/13/2018

6 KELLEY KELLEY 10/13/2018

7 Tips for Optimizing Network Connectivity
Use wired whenever possible Don’t print PDF files via wireless connection Try not to print at the same time as 30+ other people (i.e. the beginning or end of class) Turn off smartphone WiFi adapter when at KSB (see device manual/manufacturer website for details) 10/13/2018

8 Connecting to IU Wireless Network
Once you’re on campus: Run the IU Secure Setup Tool Open wireless connections Choose IU Secure wireless network 10/13/2018

9 Connecting To IU Wired Network
Turn off Wi-fi adapter Plug in ethernet cable Open web browser If not automatically taken to, go to & follow directions to register your wired ethernet address Reboot & wait about 10 minutes 10/13/2018

10 Printing At Kelley Printing at IU and Kelley is pretty simple:
Install and run the IU Printer Finder from IUWare at Choose the appropriate print queue (you should choose the black & white queue unless you want to “pay for” more expensive color output) - see slide 19 Start your print job Swipe your IU ID card at any IU printer to release the output For more details, see the KB for details. What’s the KB? Glad you asked! 10/13/2018

11 IU Knowledge Base – Your New Best (Techie) Friend
Search for relevant KB articles, such as: At IUB, what is IU Print? At IUB, how is the Student Technology Fee used? When printing at IUB, how do I get a credit for unacceptable output? At IUB, how do I print from my Mac? Now – about that print queue you should select: 10/13/2018

12 Printing at Kelley IU Printer finder Select these choices!
(For black & white, choose IUB_BW from the available printer(s) dropdown or be prepared to pay COLOR prices for B&W output!) 10/13/2018

13 Printing at Kelley/IU As a graduate student, you have paid for 1000 pages of output per semester (with automatic rollover of up to 300 pages into Spring semester) Color printing “costs” you more than black & white printing – see for more details NOTE: You must be on IU Secure or a wired connection to print, unless you create a VPN connection. For VPN info, see ATT-Wifi will not allow you to print without a VPN 10/13/2018

Provide loaner laptops (PC’s only, 1 week duration, renewable with authorization, 3 week limit per semester) Provide equipment loans (camcorders, digital cameras, LCD projectors, screens, etc) – faculty sponsor required Ethernet cables (KSB grad students only) 10/13/2018

20 Notebook Computer Support
UITS Support Center Telephone: (free & available 24x7) (free & available 24x7) Live Chat session: - UITS on-line help – (free & available 24x7) Walk-in: The Information Commons (1st floor of main library) Open M-TH until midnight; 9pm Fri; Noon-5pm Sat; Noon-Midnight Sun KSBIT KSBIT Home page Monday-Friday 7:30am-5pm in CG0013 Contact Info: or 10/13/2018

21 Supplemental Info Check with your manufacturer before you take your laptop out of the U.S. as some companies require registration prior to obtaining warranty service in another country. If any software installation asks you to install a wireless or network bridge, DO NOT DO THIS! If you receive from KSBIT, UIPO, TSSO, or SOBACCT asking you to contact the KSBIT Help Desk, please do so ASAP! It’s very likely that you have a laptop issue that needs to be addressed – failure to do so could get your network access at IU temporarily blocked! Drain your battery fully about once per month – to reset “fuel gauge” 10/13/2018

22 Supplemental Info (cont.)
Back up your critical data weekly to at least 1 other resource, 2 would be better (USB flash drives, ext. HD’s, IU Box, etc.) Mac users – don’t be fooled by the, “I have Mac & don’t need antivirus protection” school of thought. Google Mac virus for info. Get renter’s insurance! Use sleep/hibernation modes carefully Use password for machine startup Set antivirus & Windows for automatic updates and scans See for free software 10/13/2018

23 Supplemental Info (cont.)
Protect Yourself & Your Data You will never be asked for your IU passphrase – EVER! If someone asks you for it, it is a scam – DON’T FALL FOR THIS! There is no user level firewall at IU, so it’s up to you to be smart Use Windows Firewall, antivirus protection, anti-spyware software, and follow “best practices” advice Exchange server level filters are in place to help protect you, but you can make & manage your own rules if desired 10/13/2018
