Warm Up Find the rate of change of f(x)=3x + 5 between [0, 4].
2. In the 1st hour, 300 people showed up to the stadium. In the 3rd hour, 1000 people were in attendance. What is the rate of change of people attending the game?

Writing Functions
5
Important Reminders Linear Model: y = mx + b or f(x) = mx + b m = rate of change (slope) b = start value
6
Example 1: Construct a function for the relationship.
Andy wants to rent a U-Haul for his big move across the US. When he gets to the U-Haul Dealership, they tell him that it will cost an automatic 200 dollars to rent a U-Haul. In addition to the rental cost, depending on how long Andy needs the U-Haul for, he will have to pay an additional 10 dollars per hour. What is the y-intercept (constant) and slope (coefficient)? Construct a model for this relationship. Create a table of reasonable input and output values? Evaluate f(48). What does f(48) represent?
7
What is the y-intercept? What is the model? What is f(3)?
Example 2: Construct a linear model for the relationship between the input and output values What is the slope? What is the y-intercept? What is the model? What is f(3)?
8
Example 3: Construct a linear model for the relationship given by the graph.

Exit Ticket Looking at the table to the left, write the relationship that you see as a function. Sarah has 500 dollars. She is planning to give away $10 a month to children in need. Write a function to represent this relationship.
