Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 1 Prefabricated Systems for Low Energy / High Comfort Building Renewal Project Presentation Mark Zimmermann, Operating Agent Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Testing and Research continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 2 New, innovative international building renovation R&D-project. The goal is to accelerate advanced retrofit of domestic buildings by developing and promoting new renovation concepts. The project is focussing on prefabricated and factory assembled roofs, façades and HVAC systems. The main issues are optimised space use, energy efficiency, and solar integration quality assurance. The concept was proposed by representatives of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Program, the Heat Pumping Program, the PV Program and by the IEA Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems Program (ECBCS). continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 3 Prefabricated Systems for Low Energy / High Comfort Building Renewal Traditional Renovation does on site insulation of roofs and façades This work is often difficult and unsatisfactory: difficult connections between roofs and façades, difficult situations at window openings, thermal bridges due to balcony slabs The installation of a new ventilation system causes a lot internal renovation work and is often unsatisfactory

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 4 Prefabricated Building Renovation offers new opportunities The old roof is removed (when appropriate ) and replaced by a new, highly insulated and airtight roof construction The new roof offers a new attractive living space that allows the integration of a new HVAC system and a solar roof system The new ventilation system is fixed on the façades and covered by prefabricated highly insulated façade elements. Thermal bridges are eliminated, old balconies are used for a living room extension (where appropriate).

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 7 A: Concept definition and specification Annex Proposal: Prefabricated Building Renewal Proposed Substasks B: Integrated roof system C: HVAC and solar system D: Façade elements E: Monitoring and dissemination continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 8 A: Concept definition and specification Development of the whole building renovation concept Prototypes simulated, optimised, designed and specified, Subtask A will provide the specification for Subtasks B, C and D and will ensure the coordination of this work. continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 9 B: Integrated roof system Design for prefabrication, quality assurance, cost optimisation and rapid construction. Optimisation of space use, HVAC and solar integration Subtask B will provide the know-how for new roof systems for demonstration buildings continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 10 C: HVAC and solar system Design of new HVAC system, replacing the oversized and inefficient old heating system. Optimised concepts for heating, cooling, ventilation, heat recovering, hot water and solar system integration Subtask C will provide know-how for modular technical systems, integrated in prefabricated roof elements and will do the factory performance testing. continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 11 D: Façade elements Development of highly insulating façade elements including windows and other openings, opaque wall insulation and integrated service distribution for heating, cooling and ventilation. Provision of added value by converting old balconies to sunspaces or living room extensions. Optimise design, prefabrication as far as possible Subtask D will provide the know-how for optimised façade constructions and do the quality assurance on site. continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 12 E: Monitoring and dissemination Measurement and evaluation of overall performance, including energy performance comfort, cost analysis and acceptance by inhabitants and building owners. Dissemination of concepts and demonstration results, mainly for designers and building stock owners continue!

Produced by Empa IEA ECBCS Annex 50 Prefab Retrofit of Buildings Folie 13 Challenges Optimised solution packages Advanced measuring technologies Integration and prefabrication Quality assurance and risk management Opportunities Complete modular retrofit solution Highest quality standard, best technology Cost reduction potential Short construction time, low tenant disturbance
