3 Agenda Assess Current Environment Infrastructure Planning
Capacity Planning Collect Inventory using SMS 2003 Performance Testing Upgrade Strategy Infrastructure Assessment MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

4 Assess Current Environment
Network configuration Domain model DNS, WINS DHCP Protocols, devices Bandwidth Active Directory Sites Group Polices Servers OS Roles Applications MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

5 Assess Current Environment
Desktop Configuration Hardware OS Profiles Total Desktops.. Applications Number of Users and Locations Install Methods Type SMS Environment Site Hierarchy Software Distribution model Inventory configuration ... MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

6 Scope and Infrastructure Requirements
Define scope The number of desktops being deployed Desktops that require upgrades Server systems that will host OS images Network systems that will carry the OS images Define Infrastructure Requirements Hardware and performance requirements Network requirements Application requirements Management requirements Scalability requirements Security Requirements Operational Requirements MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

7 Desktop Capacity Planning
Identify minimum system requirements (memory, cpu etc) Obtain hardware and system configurations (from other feature teams or tools like SMS) Evaluate current performance Obtain performance baselines for current profiles Obtain application performance settings from the Applications teams Plan performance settings for XP system and applications MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

8 Server Planning Determine hardware configuration of Zero Touch Deployment Servers Size capacity based on number of OS images, updates etc Identify potential performance bottlenecks Define acceptable level of server performance Use Capacity Planning tools: System Monitor Network Monitor MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

9 Network Considerations
Sizing bandwidth utilization for Zero Touch Deployments Image sizes and package downloads Package Distribution settings Link speeds and availability Network usage and traffic patterns Scheduled times for other applications or high-priority operations Status messages and reporting requirements MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

10 Collect Inventories Using SMS 2003
Enable Hardware and Software Inventory Schedule Inventory periods Build queries and collections based on hardware configuration Use SMS 2003 Web reports Use SMS 2003 Resource Explorer for detailed machine configuration MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

11 Application Compatibility Analyzer
To perform the inventory, use the following tools: Inventory Engine Application Compatibility Analyzer WMI Scripting Data Store Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Tool Microsoft Access 2003 MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

12 Measuring Sizing and Capacity
CPU Utilization System% Total Processor Time: Less than 80% means the level of processor performance is acceptable. Constant measurements above 95% mean there is cause for concern. SystemProcessor Queue Length: 2 or fewer means the level of processor performance is acceptable Disk Utilization Physical disk% Disk Time Less than 80% means the level of physical disk performance is acceptable. Physical disk Current Disk Queue Length:The count minus the number of spindles on the disks should average less than two. (A RAID device would have more than MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

13 Measuring Sizing and Capacity
Memory Utilization Committed Bytes: If this value is smaller than the available amount of RAM, you have enough memory to support the running processes without excessive paging. If this value is consistently larger than available RAM, the computer is experiencing an unacceptable level of paging, and you must add more physical RAM MemoryPage Reads/sec: Constant measurements greater than five indicate a requirement for more memory Network Utilization MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

14 Infrastructure Upgrade Strategy
Better understand how to optimize the deployment Identify possible deployment issues for deployment teams Decide on upgrading existing hardware or purchasing additional hardware or resources to aid in the deployment. Plan which desktops need to be upgraded before deployment. Evaluate possible network issues and alternatives Confirm or discover additional risks to the deployment MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential

15 Infrastructure Risk Assessment
ID Risk Statement P r o b L o s s E x p Mitigation Approach Contingency Plan Trigger Date Condition Consequence 1 If the Desktop Systems desktops aren't connected to the switch using large bandwidth (fibre or gigabit) ... …then the deployment will be slowed by the capacity of the switch. 8 Verify that the capacity of the switch and the amount of data that can be moved under load will satisfy the deployment requirements. Upgrade or obtain a larger switch or blade for the deployment. Network bandwidth and connectivity won't allow installation within time window. Nov 25 2 If the single deployment server isn't connected to the switch using a gigabit fibre connection … …then the deployment will be slowed by the capacity of the server network connection. 3 9 27 Verify that the server is connected using a gigabit fibre connection. Obtain a gigabit connection for the deployment server to use for the deployment. If the deployment server doesn't have extremely fast disks ... …then the deployment will be slowed by the disk I/O. 5 Verify that the disk performance will handle the number of desktops. Obtain faster disks or even storage area network disks for the deployment. Hardware inventory of deployment server lists disk speed less than 15K. Nov 29 MediaPro, Inc. - Confidential
