3 Faculty benefits and goals
Professional services staff are crucial to Faculty operations Through the Faculty, we can support each other Chance to learn beyond department and faculty boundaries Solid evidence of positive impact from the pilot programmes undertaken last year in the three Faculties Excellent networking opportunities to share good practice and to encourage thinking with unlimited boundaries Could DFO’s speak to this slide please? 14/10/2018 © The University of Sheffield

4 Feedback from pilot schemes
Participants on the pilot schemes felt they: Gained greater understanding of their role in the University Gained greater understanding of another faculty or department Re-worked their CV to be better placed for progression Made new contacts in other parts of the University Increased self-confidence levels Increased self-reflection about their career progression and personal development 14/10/2018 © The University of Sheffield

5 “ Evaluation Quotes” Do it! It does not take much time and is a really good way to broaden your career experience. It was good to meeting someone outside my department and understand a little more how other parts of the faculty work. Do it! Its quite fun, enjoyable and rewarding. I would recommend it hugely as you gain so much insight on how other departments are run and its helpful to share concerns/ideas with someone who is not your Line Manager. I hoped to be able to help some develop their skills and work towards a goal – my mentee got another job so I definitely think the programme worked! Go for it! It takes very little time but can be really valuable. I found it useful to have someone outside my department to talk to and gain a better overview of the role of a technician in the University. I would recommend the scheme to anyone because it is informal, confidential and flexible. You are able to tailor it so you get exactly what you need without feeling under any pressure to meet formal targets. I think my mentoring partnership has benefited mostly by making a new friend in a different department, I especially enjoyed being shown around the department they worked in it. I found out about other new people who can help me in my work. I liked that there was no pressure in the mentoring and I got what I wanted out of it My mentor was excellent, exactly the level of person I was hoping to be matched with. We had lengthy chats about work, our department, the Faculty, problems, personal life, everything! I now have a greater understanding of the University and Faculty and have benefitted greatly from speak to someone with my mentor’s experience. It has been great! 14/10/2018 © The University of Sheffield

8 What is mentoring? "off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking“ Megginson & Clutterbuck (1995) “learning relationship which helps people to take charge of their own development, to release their potential and to achieve results which they value” Connor and Pokora, (2007) Mentee driven 14/10/2018 © The University of Sheffield

9 The GROW Programme is NOT a coaching scheme
What is coaching? “Coaching relates primarily to performance improvement (often over the short-term) in a specific skills area…While the learner has primary ownership of the goal, the coach has primary ownership of the process” Megginson & Clutterbuck (2005) Coach driven The GROW Programme is NOT a coaching scheme 14/10/2018 © The University of Sheffield
