1 Exploring Motion

2 Motion Vocabulary Tells us the rate at which an object moves
Tells us the rate of speed or direction changes. Is a change in position measured by distance and time Tells the speed and direction of a moving object. Motion Speed Velocity Acceleration

3 Distance-Time Graphs Distance Time
Time is always plotted on the X- Axis. Distance is always plotted on the Y- Axis.

4 Graphing Motion Distance Time
What kind of graph will a non- moving object make? Have a student stand at the front of the classroom, have another time them for 5 seconds just standing there. Graph the results.

5 At Rest Objects How far did the object travel over the time period? Time is increasing to the right, but its distance did not change. The object is not moving. The object is stopped or at rest.

6 Graphing Motion Distance Time
What kind of graph will an object moving at a constant speed look like? Have a student walk slowly across the room, have another time them for 5 seconds Graph the results.

7 Constant Speed How far did the object travel over a period of time?
Time is increasing to the right Distance is increasing constantly with time. The object moves at constant speed.

8 Graphing Fast Motion Distance Time
What kind of graph will an object moving at a quick but constant speed look like? Have a student walk quickly across the room, have another time them for 5 seconds Graph the results.

9 Fast Constant Speed How far did the object travel over a period of time? Time is increasing to the right Distance is increasing constantly with time. A steeper line means more distance was covered in a given time. The object moves at constant speed.

10 Graphing Getting faster
Distance Time What kind of graph will an object getting faster look like? Have a student walk slowly for three seconds, and then quickly for two seconds across the room, have another time them for 5 seconds Graph the results.

11 Getting Faster How far did the object travel over a period of time?
Time is increasing to the right Why is it not a straight line? It is not Constant or steady increase Shows an increase in speed because the line is getting more steep. The object is accelerating.

12 Review Which one is faster? How do you know?

13 What is always increasing to the right? Time What is speed?
Review What is always increasing to the right? Time What is speed? Distance over time

14 Review What is always on the X-Axis? Time What is always on the Y-Axis? Distance
