Interior West FIA “Virtual” User Group Meeting
April 13, 2010 With the economic challenges Travel restrictions Reducing carbon footprint Possibility of getting more people engaged Decided to try this webinar approach…. As we are a research organization, we had to try this… F I A
2
Purpose of the User Group
Annual Update on FIA Share Information on Analysis & Techniques research Seek Feedback Are we helping you? What changes do you recommend? F I A
3
What is FIA? Strategic baseline inventory and monitoring of forest resources Trees Understory vegetation Downed woody material Soils Harvesting, processing, products (TPO) Private forest owners surveys Techniques research

Accomplishments 2009 FIA Business Report posted on the Web
Measured 2,316 forested plots (up 7%) Published 35 articles/reports (up 75%) 2X the consultation hours (reporting + increase) Lowest number of work related injuries/illnesses (since 2006) Tidbit: 18% of workforce non-federal F I A

Appropriated Funding NATIONAL
2010 is 92% of TARGET appropriation R&D S&PF % more appropriated (69.8) TARGET 78million F I A

The total funding provided amounts to 97% of the “full funding” total in FY 2010 dollars. The R&D total also includes $490,000 to support research at Experimental Forest and Range sites focused on climate change research and carbon inventories. See the note below. S&PF base allocation of $1,682,000 which includes: $500,000 to fully fund New Mexico, $82,000 to fully fund the Nevada inventory, $180,000 for NRIS support, $110,000 for QA support, $104,000 for Soils Indicator Lead and lab work. Remainder to support ongoing annualized inventory work. See explanatory note. F I A

What’s NEW in 2010? Support for NM ARRA funding
Experimental Forest & Rangelands Climate Change Genetic Sampling Update the FIA National Strategic Plan New Mexico received $.0 million in ARRA for jobs in natural resources – doing acceleration of plots to catch up 3-4 panels of data. We are training and doing QA Congress added $2.0 million to FIA base with the purpose of integrating the intensive site research on EF&Rs with the broader framework of FIA PARTICULARLY for carbon assessment and climate change. A national team is working on an implementation and funding strategy; Not just plots. A lot of science is needed to make those linkages. Test using the FIA production effort for improving climate modeling and expanding genetic sampling – we have several studies funded by the Station in ALL our States to expand on local studies. Updating the Strategic Plan following the Inventory and Monitoring Science Program review – which went VERY well, and in fact mostly provided support for our current direction. F I A
21
Goals for 2010 Continue the annual inventory work in current States (UT, CO, AZ, ID, MT, NM) Implement annual inventory in Nevada and initiate the annual inventory in Wyoming Collaborate with NM to install 3-4 panels Implement MIDAS everywhere Continued emphasis on safety and efficiency F I A
