Internet The Internet is a network of networks – a global communications system that links together thousands of individual networks.

The Internet’s History
1969: ARPA of the US department of Defense began – connecting computers at different universities and defense contactors. The network called ARPANET 1973: The network connected to Europe 1980: Another govt agency NFS joined the project 1990: ARPANET shut down 1995: NFS net discontinued & Commercial Internet backbone services replaced them

World Wide Web (WWW) An Internet service developed to incorporate footnotes, figures, and cross-references into online hypertext documents.

Electronic Mail (E-Mail)
A system for exchanging written, voice, and video messages through a computer network.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
A set of rules that dictates the format in which data is sent from one computer to another computer.

Hypertext Web documents can be linked together because they are created a format known as Hypertext. Hypertext systems provide an easy way to manage large collections of data , which can include text files, pictures, sounds, movies, and more.

HTTP To support hypertext documents, the web uses a special protocol, called the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

HTML Hypertext Markup Language(HTML): A page–description language used on the World Wide Web that defines the hypertext links between documents

Web Site A collection of related Web pages is called a Web site.

URL: Uniform Resource Locator
The hypertext transfer protocol uses Internet address in a special format, called a URL.
