Volcano Explorers: Volcanologists
Unit 2 Day 5 Volcano Explorers: Volcanologists
2
Bell Ringer: Pompeii 1. Describe what happens at a subduction zone. What type of landform is often created there? 2. Find (2) boundaries on this map where you would expect a volcano. 3. Name all of the possible ways you can think of to DIE by volcano! 4. What does a volcanologist do?
3
The Dog of Pompeii. As you read the story, think about the time period and try to find out how people lived in the days of Pompeii. After you’re finished reading, answer the Analysis questions on the back on a separate sheet of paper.
4
Mt. St. Helens: RING OF FIRE
1. What caused the dome? The BULGE?! 2. What happened first, to cause the landslide? 3. How did the landslide impact the volcano? 4. How far-reaching were the effects of this violent eruption?
6
AGENDA Dog of Pompeii Volcano Notes (fill out Venn Diagram)
Demo: Baking soda and acid (change mL acid) Virtual Volcano Explorer Factors that lead to explosiveness!
7
Where would we expect to see volcanoes?
Volcano location and plate boundaries
8
VOLCANO A VOLCANO is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the Earth. When pressure builds up, ERUPTIONS occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments!
9
Topographic Map Skills: Volcano
Does this map show a volcano? A caldera? How do you know? What do the hachure marks mean?
10
Anatomy of a Volcano Label each part of the volcano.
11
ASH CLOUDS THINK: What are the health effects of inhaling ASH?!
How far can an ash cloud travel?
13
WHAT MAKES A VOLCANO EXPLOSIVE?!
1. VISCOSITY: substance’s resistance to flow Syrup = high viscosity Water = low viscosity 2. DISSOLVED GASES Gases = CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H20 (water) High viscosity magma traps more gases. More gases = more explosive!
14
Which type of magma is MOST explosive?!
15
SHIELD VOLCANOES: --shortest, least explosive, ISLANDS!
BUILT FROM LIQUIDS, FORM ISLANDS!
16
COMPOSITE (STRATOVOLCANO) – --STEEPEST!
BUILT FROM BOTH SOLID ROCK AND FLUID LAVA!
17
CINDER CONE VOLCANO (INTERMEDIATE)
BUILT FROM SOLIDS, USUALLY 1 eruption!
18
THINK: DO VOLCANOES EVER FORM in the middle of plates?!
19
OTHER VOLCANIC DANGERS
Lava Flows Ash Clouds
20

CLICK ENTER. BUILD YOUR OWN VIRTUAL VOLCANO!
21
VOLCANO EXPLORER 1. Which combination of viscosity and gas created the MOST explosive volcano? Which type of volcano was formed? 2. How were the two shield volcanoes different? (dissolved gas or viscosity)? 3. Why was the fire fountain present only in the shield volcano with low viscosity and high dissolved gas? 4. Which volcano showed a pyroclastic flow? Which volcano was most like Pompeii?!

EXIT TICKET Each circle represents one type of volcano
