Theories of Social Influence:
EQ: What are the theories of Social Influence and how do they explain behavior?

I. Conformity: Changing one’s behavior or beliefs to match those of others, generally as a result of real or imagined group pressure EX: -Peers -Religion -Norms

II. Compliance: Adjusting one’s behavior due to an explicit or implicit request EX: -your friend asks you to come their house by 7. You show up at 6:58.

III. Obedience: Changing one’s behavior in response to a demand from an authority figure EX: -Mr. Creech says, “Bring your textbook or you will get a detention Jive Turkeys!!!”

IV. Minority Influence:
When the members of a numerical minority in a group alter the view of the majority EX: -Civil Rights Movement -12 Angry Men

V. Cost-Reward Theory of Arousal:
A theory attributing people’s helping behavior to their efforts to reduce the unpleasant arousal they feel in the face of someone’s need or suffering. EX: -I feed that homeless guy because I feel guilty of my own status

VI. Bystander Effect: A phenomenon in which the chances the someone will help in an emergency decrease as the number of people present increases There are exceptions to this rule

VII. Empathy Altruism Theory:
A theory suggesting that people help each other people because they are empathetic to their needs EX: I see a homeless person and I feed them because they need help
