Definition of B/L A document issued by a carrier, or its agent, to the shipper as the contract carriage of goods. It is also receipt for cargo accepted for transportation, and must be presented for taking delivery at the destination.

Definition of type B/L An "on-board B/L" is issued when the cargo has been placed aboard the named vessel. It is signed and certified by the master of the vessel. For a letter of credit transaction, this bill of lading is required in order for the exporter to get paid. (Valid B/L) A “received for shipment B\L” it is B/L which serves only as a receipt for goods accepted for shipment on a named ship (vessel), and does not certify their placement aboard the vessel. Used where the goods arrive at the port of departure before the vessel does, this type of B/L is not considered a complete B/L and is replaced by a shipped on board bill of lading when the goods do go onboard.(Not valid B/L)

Definition of type B/L A "clean B/L" is issued when the shipment is received in "apparent good order and condition" without damages or other irregularities. If there is any damage or a shortage of product is found, a clean bill of lading will not be issued. Therefore there is nothing to qualify the admission that the goods are shipped in good order and condition in the clean bill of lading. (in good condition) Claused B/LDirty B/LUnclean B/L. An "unclean B/L" is a Bill of Lading that has been claused by the carrier to show that the goods were not in sound condition when received. Also called a Foul B/L, Claused B/L, Dirty B/L, or Unclean B/L. (not without damage)

Types of Bill of Lading & When To Use Them Shipped On Board B/L: A Shipped On Board Bill of Lading is issued when the cargo arrives at the port in good, expected condition from the shipping carrier and is then loaded onto the cargo ship for transport over seas. Received for shipment B/L It is simply a Bill of Lading stating that the cargo has arrived at the port and is cleared to be loaded on the ship, but does not necessary mean it has been loaded. Used as a temporary BOL when a ship is late and will be replaced by a Shipped On Board Bill of Lading when the ship arrives and the cargo is loaded.

Types of Bill of Lading Forms & When To Use Them Clean B/L : A Clean Bill of Lading is simply a BOL that the shipping carrier has to sign off on saying that when the packages were loaded they were in good condition. If the packages are damaged or the cargo is marred in some way (rusted metal, stained paper, etc.), they will need to issue a “Soiled Bill of Lading” or a “Foul Bill of Lading.” Unclean B/L: If the cargo is damaged or there are missing quantities, a Claused Bill of Lading is issued.

Difference between a Clean and Dirty B/L A clean B/L has no superimposed clauses stating a defective condition or shortage of the goods. It states that the goods are received in apparent good order and condition without any remarks as to their condition. foul’ B/L A dirty B/L is also known as a ‘claused’ or ‘foul’ B/L. It is claused with remarks such as ‘torn bags’, ‘rusty drums’ or ‘three more cases in dispute – if found on board will be delivered’ etc. A banker normally demands a full set of clean B/L as per the terms of the Letter of Credit (LoC or LC). Pressure will be exerted on the master to release a clean B/L even when the actual conditions do not justify doing so.

Addition Letter of Credit In modern business practice, a letter of credit (LC) also known as a Documentary Credit, is a written commitment by a bank issued after a request by an importer (foreign buyer) that payment will be made to the beneficiary (exporter) provided that the terms and conditions stated in the LC been met, as evidenced by the presentation of specified documents

Difference between Shipped on board B/L and Received for shipment B/L Shipped On Board B/L confirms that the carrier has “received” the containers at the port facility for loading onto a specific ship or voyage.. This DOES NOT mean that the container(s) has been shipped on board.. Received for shipment B/L confirms that the carrier has received and loaded the containers physically on board the specified ship or voyage.. This is DEFINITE proof that the container(s) have been loaded..
