Primary Industries Primary industries are those that harvest or extract raw material from nature, such as agriculture, oil and gas extraction, logging and forestry, mining, fishing, and trapping. In Canada, primary industries such as oil and gas contribute to 3.5% of Canada’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product – a fancy way of saying how much money Canada makes in a year) while the remaining primary industries contributed 2.6% (retrieved from:

Secondary Industries Secondary industries are those industries that convert raw materials into finished industrial products; it is also known as a manufacturing or construction industry. It includes food processing and steel manufacturing companies. This industry contributes approximately 21% to Canada’s GDP

Tertiary Industries Tertiary industries are those industries that provide services rather than products; it is also known as a service industry. It includes restaurants, schools and financial institutions. This industry contributes approximately 73% to Canada’s GDP

Primary industries are found all over the world, Canada and in Manitoba Can you name some primary industries in Manitoba? What about in Winnipeg?

Diamonds! For example…. Africa and Australia are the main producers of diamonds BUT they are also mined in Canada, in the Northwest Territories and in Ontario Diamond mine in Africa What is a diamond made of? This is the diamond mine north of Yellowknife, NWT, Canada

OIL! For example…. Oil comes from many countries in the middle east.
In Canada, it is found in Alberta, Manitoba, and off the shore of Newfoundland Hibernia Oil Rig off the coast of NFLD Oil well in Manitoba (around Virden, MB)

FISH! For example…. We get some of our fish from all over the world (ex: bluefin tuna from Mediterranean Sea) Canada has 7.1 million ocean area with many, many diverse species (salmon from BC, swordfish from the East Coast)
