1 After looking through tons of survey results, including open-ended comments and feedback, We have learnt that many people prefer to have air-conditioning in the hall, followed by some classrooms most likely because the hall is very warm. The reason why most people feel that we should not install air-conditioning is because of the environmental effects that this would bring, especially global warming (long term), which is a result of burning of fossil fuels due to high energy consumption. Therefore, we conclude that we should install environmental– friendly air-cons in the hall and try to install some in some of the more affected classrooms as we may not get enough funding. This investment will benefit the teachers and students in the affected areas and also will not affect the environment greatly in the long run. This saves the students and teachers from potential dehydration and sunburn. FIGHT. FOR. COOL. AIR Studied by Your Friendly Air-con Servicemen STUDY. SURVEY. STATISTICS. In order to convince the school to install air-conditioning, statistics must be shown. After all, seeing is believing. Statistics is used here to make informed decisions and inferences about the process or population being studied in many areas and pertains also to the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data and thus is useable in our context for our current situation and dilemma. Therefore, we did an online survey to collect data using an online survey tool, QuestionPRO. After asking for the approval, we e-mailed the whole school, which we divided into 2 main groups, namely the students and staff. We classified and tabulated the total results of the 2 groups, shown below. Hypothesis: If the people taking the survey feel that there is a want and general need for air-conditioning in the hall and/or classrooms then, air-conditioners should be installed and vice-versa. The problem faced and to be solved is that most parts of our school, NUS High School of Mathematics and Science is unbearably hot daily. Also, Singapore is located extremely near to the equator, thus causing the trademark hot and humid tropical climate. One of the ways out of this scorching predicament is to get the hall and some classes to be air-conditioned. We, the air-conditioning team in NUS High have decided to do something about this problem. Thus, the teachers results, except for their open-ended comments, were not included. Most students feel that they usually feel warm in the hall, followed by the classrooms. Both places currently do not have air-conditioners. Most students think that the hall is warm most of the time they go there. This suggests that the hall should have the priority of having air-conditioners. The graph above shows that most of the students feel that the hall is the hottest and warmest amongst other places in the school. Students want to have air-conditioners installed everywhere in the school, especially in the hall. However, a portion of respondents said NO to air-conditioners. Most students feel that air-conditioners are necessary and needed (different from want) in the hall. However, a significant portion of students feel that air-conditioners are not necessary and needed currently. More than 60% of students will depend on the amount of money needed to pay for air-conditioners in the school if air-conditioners are installed. Around 5% of the students surveyed will pay for the money for air-conditioning. However, one-third of the respondents will not pay for air-conditioning, even if the amount of money is small. Open-Ended Questions and Comments from Teachers: Why do you think there is/is not a need to have air-conditioning in our school, especially in the hall and classrooms? Why do you want/not want to have air-conditioning in our school, especially in the hall and classrooms? You may wish to support your reasons/arguments with evidence. Having a conducive environment for learning is important. This is especially applicable in the classrooms, where students are expected to stay awake during afternoon lessons. The classrooms are warm and stuffy in the afternoon and it would be good to have a cool environment. Having air-cons in the lab is not necessary because students are performing hands-on activities, which will help in keeping them focused. Besides, certain experiments require higher temperature to perform and this higher operating temperature will put additional stress on the air-con compressors. Not necessary. There is first and foremost no need as the rooms and hall are actually not hot / warm as there is plenty of air flow most of the time. Plus class sizes are quite small. Air-conditioning the classes & hall will bring its own problems, like down-time for maintenance. Some class rooms have a greater need for air-conditioning, but it is a need borne out of noise pollution, not heat / high temperatures. How do you think we might be able to obtain the funds needed for the air-conditioning? To what extent do you think this method of obtaining the funds will succeed? Ultimately, do you think air-conditioners will be able to be installed in NUSHS? You may wish to support your answers with reasons. Fund-raising through fun fairs, Generous donations from foundations & companies, Generous donations from parents through the help of PSG and Board of Governors. I think it might be possible if there are additional funding from it, if not the school will not install. I definitely hope that air-cons will be installed in NUSHS. How do you think we can solve the 'mini-global warming' problem in our school differently? Are there any comments or constructive feedback and/or questions that you want to ask? You may wish to support your reasons/arguments with evidence. Air-con should only be on if there is a class, if not it should be off. it should maintain a temperature of 24 degree Celsius and not below. Air-con should not be on after classes unless permission is given, e.g. group discussion after class should be done in the library discussion room. Unless there isn't enough then only some classes are designated to be the discussion room. This is to cut down on the usage of electricity. 7.29% 2.08% 4.17% 13.54% 3.13% 69.79% 14.73% 36.43% 24.03%24.81% 15.38% 21.37% 40.17% 23.08%
