Think and Share If someone were describing your car, which one of these words would make you the most upset? Explain why in a complete sentence. Cheap, Bargain, and Inexpensive

3 Think and Share- Definitions
Inexpensive – Didn’t cost much, but probably doesn’t have many extras like heated seats. Cheap – Didn’t cost much, but likely is embarrassing to drive. Bargain – Didn’t cost much, but you received a great deal on your purchase.

4 Connotation Vs. Denotation
Denotation – Dictionary definition Connotation – Feelings or ideas a reader connects to a word In Literature, Connotation helps you determine the mood and tone of the story, article or poem.

5 How does this work? Think of the nicknames of sports teams for example.

6 Are used to be intimidating or fierce.
Animals Are used to be intimidating or fierce.

7 Groups of People Are used to be seen as brave or people who don’t give up

8 Class Practice On your paper, write down the more positive word in each of the following examples. Explain why. Whisper or Mumble House or Home Skinny or Thin Scream or Cheer Job or Career

9 Color Connotation Write down the denotation for RED –
Denotation – One of the three primary colors Connotation – With a partner, write down as many idea or things that come to mind that you connect with Red

10 RED Authors often use colors to help with connotation Stop Danger
Angry Hot Authors often use colors to help with connotation Love

11 Partner Practice  With a Partner – write down as many connotations for each of the following colors: Blue Yellow Green Black

12 Exit Ticket Would you rather someone call you brainy, intelligent, smart or genius? Explain why in a complete sentence.
