8-1 Adding & Subtracting Polynomials
Algebra 1
3
Polynomial Is An expression which is the sum of the terms
Degree of a term or monomial – the sum of the exponents of its variables Degree of a Polynomial – the greatest exponent of its terms.
4
Ex. 1 – Identify the degree of the term or polynomial
1a.) 7x² - 4x³ + 5 1b.) 4x²y³z
5
Standard Form of a polynomial
Is in descending order of the exponents with the constant last.
6
Types of Polynomials Monomial – 1 term Binomial – 2 terms
Trinomial – 3 terms Polynomial – many terms Show examples of each
7
Classifying Polynomials
Degree Equation Name # of terms 5xº or 5 Constant 1 3x - 5 Linear 2 4x² + 3x - 5 Quadratic 3 8x³ -4x² + x + 9 Cubic 4 Quartic 5
8
Ex. 2 Write each polynomial in standard form. What is the name of the polynomial based on its degree & the number of terms? 2a.) 6x² + 4x x³ 2b.) 18x – 4 + x³
9
Adding or Subtracting Polynomials
When you add or subtract polynomials, add/subtract the coefficients of like terms. Reminder: Like terms means same variable/s with same exponents.
10
My Method Circle, underline, or box alike terms and add/subtract in your head!
11
Example 3 (9y –7x + 15a) + ( -3y + 8x – 8a)
12
Method 1 Example (9y –7x + 15a) + ( -3y + 8x – 8a).
(9y - 3y) + (-7x + 8x) + (15a – 8a)
13
Method 1 Example (9y –7x + 15a) + ( -3y + 8x – 8a)
(9y - 3y) + (-7x + 8x) + (15a – 8a) = 6y x a
15
Example 4 Just rearrange in columns and add. _______________
16
Example 5 (7a – 10b) – (3a + 4b –2c)
17
