Which of these documents is fact-based? Which is an opinion? Disaster and Recovery in Japan Friday, March 11 was cold and cloudy in northern Japan. Winter still had the region in its grip. Just after 2:45 in the afternoon, a massive 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Honshu, Japan’s largest island. Additionally, the earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that crashed ashore along the coast of Honshu. The depth of the tsunami varied from place to place. In some areas, the wave reached above 100 feet (30.48m). In other areas the wave was feet (9-12m) high. Tsunami Warnings Came Too Late My wonderful grandparents live in Japan. They own a fishing business in Miyagi Prefecture. Their town was totally devastated by the awesome tsunami that struck the area on March 11. When I talked to my grandparents on the phone, I was surprised to learn that they did not hear the tsunami warnings go off. Luckily for them, they knew to get away from the coastline when an earthquake takes place. I feel that Japan should invest money in creating a different tsunami alert system. I believe that the sirens did not work and are not a good enough warning. Young people don’t know enough about the dangers of tsunamis.
