**Pay close attention to the tone of the poem! Tone= the speaker’s attitude towards the subject. (Don’t forget to add it to your literary vocabulary) Audio:

3 What did you notice about the tone/ attitude?
You should have noticed that the tone, or attitude, of the speaker is warm, encouraging, and uplifting.

4 Turn to page 5 in your student materials--- Activity 2
(Omit activity 1- vocabulary) Activity 2- Connotative Diction-- Determine the meaning of words of phrases with figurative or connotative meanings used in the text. Do the words bring to mind positive of negative feelings? What more specific emotions do the wods suggest?

Write an objective summary of the poem. An objective summary is a summary that only tells of all of the main points in what you have read.

8 Activity 4- Allusions Add the definition of an allusion on the front cover of your student material (you should be putting it under diction, denotation, connotation, allegory, and motif). An allusion is a reference to someone or something commonly known from literature, history, religion or other areas of culture.

Using the tone resource, determine what the speaker’s attitude toward the subject seems to be. (Answer)The poem is written in second person-- using the pronouns you and your. The narrator employs a reflective (thoughtful) and instructive (providing information) tone.

What is symbolism? Symbolism-- a story element used by authors to give the reader a deeper understanding of the text by using an object to represent an idea or to give meaning that is DIFFERENT from the literal definition of the object. ----- Now that you know what symbolism is, what does the city of Ithaka seem to symbolize in this poem?

Ithaca, the home town of Odysseus, is a symbol for a highly desired object that drives behavior and action. Even though Odysseus is trying to get home throughout the epic, this poem suggests that a person learns more from the journey than in reaching the destination.
