Effects of major eruptions Increasing amounts of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere e.g. –CO 2 produced by road transport, burning fossil fuels, deforestation and burning of TRFs. –CFCs from aerosols, air conditioners, refrigerators and foam packaging etc.. –Methane from peat bogs, rice paddies, animal dung and belching cows. –NOx emissions form vehicle exhausts, power stations and agricultural fertilisers.

Rising sea levels of 20 to 40cm mean low lying areas, e.g. the Fens and parts of the Thames Estuary. There will be more gales and storms, particularly in winter. The winter 2000/01 was the wettest since records began.

Average temperatures may rise by 1.6 oC by 2050. Farmers in the south will need to irrigate their crops. Water companies will have to store more water to meet increased demand. Britain could become more popular as a holiday destination, pavement cafes could flourish and air conditioning will be needed further south. There will be more rain and more likelihood of flooding in the autumn and winter. More money will need to be spent on building flood protection e.g. embankments Coniferous trees will grow more quickly, so up to 15% more wood will be produced, but deciduous trees could die from drought and disease. Vines, sunflowers and maize could be grown in the south. Insect pests could flourish.
