Global Climate Change Aim- To describe and account for variations in average global temperatures over the last 100 years, and suggest possible consequences of this trend.
2
Read pages 26-30 of the Higher Core Textbook. Copy- Causes of Global Warming; Plate tectonics Variations in solar energy Astronomical cycles e.g. tilt of the earths axis and orbital variations. Effects of major eruptions Increasing amounts of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere e.g. –CO 2 produced by road transport, burning fossil fuels, deforestation and burning of TRFs. –CFCs from aerosols, air conditioners, refrigerators and foam packaging etc.. –Methane from peat bogs, rice paddies, animal dung and belching cows. –NOx emissions form vehicle exhausts, power stations and agricultural fertilisers.

Global Climate Change Aim- To describe and account for variations in average global temperatures over the last 100 years, and suggest possible consequences of this trend. Label whether each cause is physical or human. What is the greenhouse effect? 2 marks In rank order of importance what are the main greenhouse gases? (see fig 2.34)

To describe and account for variations in average global temperatures over the last 100 years, and suggest possible consequences of this trend. How will global warming affect Britain? Rising sea levels of 20 to 40cm mean low lying areas, e.g. the Fens and parts of the Thames Estuary. There will be more gales and storms, particularly in winter. The winter 2000/01 was the wettest since records began.

To describe and account for variations in average global temperatures over the last 100 years, and suggest possible consequences of this trend. Summers will be warmer and drier. Average temperatures may rise by 1.6 oC by 2050. Farmers in the south will need to irrigate their crops. Water companies will have to store more water to meet increased demand. Britain could become more popular as a holiday destination, pavement cafes could flourish and air conditioning will be needed further south. There will be more rain and more likelihood of flooding in the autumn and winter. More money will need to be spent on building flood protection e.g. embankments Coniferous trees will grow more quickly, so up to 15% more wood will be produced, but deciduous trees could die from drought and disease. Vines, sunflowers and maize could be grown in the south. Insect pests could flourish.

Global Climate Change Aim- To describe and account for variations in average global temperatures over the last 100 years, and suggest possible consequences of this trend. Using the graph below, describe and explain the changes in global temperatures As shown on the graph. 10 marks Suggest how these changes may have consequences for Britain? 5 marks
