5 Origins of Psychology 400 B.C Plato coined the term ‘Psyche’ to describe the mind and soul.

6 1879 What do you know happened in Psychological history in this year?
Hint: Father of Psychology What did he do? He ensured psychological investigations were highly scientific by using Standardised instructions given to all participants. (Who are participants?), which allowed procedures to be replicated.

7 1886 Developed ‘Psychoanalysis’ Provided Psychotherapy in Austria
Sigmund Freud Developed ‘Psychoanalysis’ Provided Psychotherapy in Austria Emphasised the importance of the unconscious mind.

8 1839 Charles Darwin Natural selection and the Theory of Evolution.
Survival of the Fitest.

9 1913 Behaviourism is established by Watson and later by Skinner. Its popularity enables it to dominate Psychology for 50 years.

10 1954 Free will &self determination are seen as very important.
This ‘third force’ in Psychology rejected behaviour & psychodynamic approach.

11 1963 Bandura proposes the Social Learning Theory which provides a link between the new cognitive approach and the traditional behavioural approach.

12 1980 onwards Biological approach begins to use brain and biological processes, to establish itself as the main scientific approach in Psychology.

13 Near the 21st Century Cognitive neuroscience links the ……………….. Approach and the …………………….approach.
