Which Essential Oils are Most Useful for Fitness?
Oils with warming and cooling properties Oils with uplifting, energizing, invigorating, and motivating properties Oils with calming, relaxing properties Each essential oil has a unique set of chemical properties that give the oil a distinct aroma, specific benefits, and makes it useful for certain tasks. When it comes to using essential oils for fitness, the most useful oils will be ones with warming, cooling, uplifting, or calming properties. Warming and cooling oils Essential oils with warming or cooling properties can be helpful both before and after exercise because they can provide a soothing sensation to the skin and other areas of the body. For example, by topically massaging warming oils into the skin during your warm up, you can help loosen the muscles and prepare them for movement. When you are done exercising, applying cooling oils to areas like the legs, feet, and back can help soothe the body. Both warming and cooling oils are useful during a warm up or a cool down, and can be helpful for things like stretching and massage. You can apply essential oils with uplifting or invigorating qualities to the skin through topical application, or apply a small amount of oil to your clothing before working out so the aroma remains with you while you exercise. You can also help promote energizing or motivating feelings by diffusing uplifting essential oils before working out or during your workout if you are exercising at home. Essential oils like Bergamot, Cypress, Grapefruit, Lemon, Spearmint, and Tangerine have uplifting properties and can help promote energy, motivation, and vitality for your workout. Calming and relaxing oils After vigorous exercise, it is important to relax and rest in order to give the body time to recover and repair before your next workout. Dilute essential oils like Peppermint with dōTERRA® Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub on the chest before your workout to promote clear breathing. If working out at home, diffuse essential oils like Grapefruit, Bergamot, Wintergreen, and other oils with an uplifting aroma to keep you motivated throughout your workout. After your workout, massage essential oils like Coriander and Lemongrass to the legs and feet to help soothe and relax the muscles. For some people, a trip to the gym is a regular part of their daily or weekly fitness routine. Essential oils can be extremely useful for gym workouts— whether you go to a facility or like to work out using your own equipment at home. Discuss each of the tips on this slide. You can also share the following DIY with the audience if you want to teach them how to make a cleansing spray for workout equipment using essential oils: Essential Oil Equipment Cleansing Spray 2–4 ounce spray bottle 5 drops of essential oil(s) Witch hazel (¼ of spray bottle) Filtered water Recommended oils: Try using oils with cleansing properties like Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, or Wild Orange, Combine all ingredients together in the glass bottle.
