Berry (1967) Aim: how does conformity relate to culture Method: experimental (version of the Asch experiment ) Temne people (agricultural) – rely on cooperarion. Inuits (hunters & fishers) must be able to track and hunt on their own. Results: Inuits were almost non-conforming whereas the Temne were mostly conforming Example: Culture influenced Behavior

Culture: the norms and values defined by a society. Berry (1967) deals primarily with the concept of conformity, but let’s see how some more general behaviors might be influenced by culture…

Tipping: Agree or Disagree If one does not “tip” in a typical restaurant setting, it would be considered rude behavior. However, most Japanese establishments and patrons might consider the practice an insult.

Whistling: Agree or Disagree A sign of ease and care-free feelings. It’s usually associated with “happiness”. Unless of course you are a younger Haitian and near an elder…one should also avoid sitting cross-legged, making direct eye contact, or standing with hands on hips…

Opening a gift in front of the giver (and others): Agree or Disagree Might seem like great appreciation or excitement, and isn’t the best part in the giving itself?!? Many in China and India might consider this a faux pas…the possibility of “out-gifting” others, as well as perhaps a sign of greediness on the part of the receiver of said gift…

The social self is said to be a collective or social identity. We can see ourselves as individuals… “I am …” But we also see ourselves within a larger context… “I am …”

How is it then that we might behave in one fashion in certain circumstances, yet an entirely different manner in others? FFM: Does this explain us to an adequate degree?
