6 How are Mentoring and being a Big sister Related?

7 Mentoring and Big Sister Experience
Value of near peer advice Theory from Babson College & Susan Duffy You can learn just as much from someone who’s just a few years older as you can from someone who is 15 – 20 years older You have good advice to give and have influence over others You get out what you put in Take time to learn about someone and help them meet their goals Creates the “family” feel Need a group of women who support you If you put in good, you get good out Mentoring feels great Can see the rewards of your little and her success You feel better after helping someone out and seeing them succeed Investing in relationships pays off Mentoring teaches you how to be a mentee Recognize the need to share big and small victories with mentor because your little might share those with you Handwritten thank you not goes a long way

8 Six tips for being a mentor
Be yourself Know why you’re here And what you hope to provide Understand how you impact Remember you’re always a role model Helping is why you’re there, not fixing

10 Reminders

11 Things to Keep in mind Look back on Sisterhood Day during recruitment. Did your chapter talk about gifts or big/little week? Make sure someone who trust is delivering your gifts – you are responsible for their behavior so choose wisely! Gifts are not competition between you and your sisters During delivery weeks, and always, be respectful to the Residence Life staff Remember gifts cannot be left at the resident hall desks Women should never be asked to perform at task, sing a song, answer a question, etc. to receive her gift. No! Women talked about how influential their sisters have been in their college experience and how they have always been there for them. Gifts are fun, but far from the most important part of being someone big sister 3. Number of gifts or value of gifts should be reasonable and not an opportunity for one-upping each other 4 & 5. We need to be good neighbors, partners, etc. 6. Asking a women do anything, even if she is okay with it, to receive a gift is hazing. Again you responsible for the contents of your gift and behavior of those delivering, so make sure you can trust them!
