2 Definition A Chromosome is an organized structure of DNA and protein that is found in cells. It is a single piece of coiled DNA containing many genes, regulatory elements and other nucleotide sequences.

3 Basic Structure of a Chromosome

4 X & Y Chromosomes X chromosomes makes up 5% of total DNA in Females and 2.5% in males. Y chromosomes makes up about 2% in males, females do not have a Y chromosomes

5 Number of Chromosomes in different organisms.
Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46.

6 Down Syndrome Chromosomal disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome.

Separate the chromatids. Holds the two chromatids together. Has no real function. Helps with the reproduction of chromosomes.
