2 Scanning and Scenarios
Methodology Scanning and Scenarios

3 Scenarios Benefits Challenges
“Don't limit a child to your own learning, for he was born in another time.” - Rabindranath Tagore Scenarios Benefits Challenges Organize information into a manageable framework Encourage strategic decision making Support long-term goal setting Planning and preparation Highlights strengths and weaknesses of possible decisions Accuracy Variables and Unknowns Steady Influx of New Information Constantly evolving scenarios Complexity Multiple scenarios can be overwhelming Single scenario can be too simplistic Focus on optimistic scenarios under preparedness

4 Scanning Benefits Challenges
“The principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done.” - Jean Piage Scanning Benefits Challenges Systematic approach to information gathering Focuses on trends Considers multiple influences: Technologic, social, historic, cultural, etc. Internet provides multitudes of resources for scanning Gives context to inform scenarios Enormous scope of resource material to scan Some variables unknown Information becomes obsolete quickly Viral trends/information spreading rapidly

5 Economic and Demographic Trends
Educational Trends Economic and Demographic Trends

6 Demographic Trends The Changing U.S. Family
Increase in working mothers Sixty percent of mothers with children under the age of six worked in 2008 compared with 33 percent in (RUHM, 2011) Increase in single parent families Sole-parent households rose from 23 percent in 1980 to 30 percent in (RUHM, 2011) More working parents means that childcare and preschool options are critical.

7 Educational Technology Trends
Wireless Internet and BYOD OER (Open Educational Resources) Requires Wireless infastructure Enables Personal Devices to Fill Gaps in Tech Increases Student Engagement Improves Options for Teaching and Learning Easy Integration of Future Tech Provides Additional Options for After School Activities Provides Key Resources Fills Gaps Created By Budget Shortages Can Be Used to Address Common Core Weaknesses Supports Commitment to Low Taxes Frees Funds for Tech Integration and Staff Training

8 Economic Trends Preschool and Early Intervention Programs
Income inequality in Connecticut is the worst in the nation. (Sommeiller, 2015) Schools provide many support services to families in need. Low-cost and no-cost preschool provide low-income families early access to resources. (RUHM, 2011) Problem: Families in rural areas don’t have access to affordable preschool. (Scata, 2013) Solution: Universal preschool would enable low-income families in all areas to access public school resources earlier. (Curran, 2015) Source: (Aud, 20013)
