1 Portfolio Art I

2 Objectives Create a functional pocket style portfolio to store & preserve artwork & art related paperwork Create name in block letters using 1 point perspective Represent value based on a light source & use pattern on the letter faces Self reflect on portfolio project

3 Why do artists use portfolios?
What is a portfolio? A meaningful collection of an artist’s work that highlights their skills & progress Why do artists use portfolios? To store & preserve artworks

4 How will you be using your portfolio?
To store & preserve your: Sketches Notes Handouts Art Projects Anything else art related you work on in this class Where will you store your portfolio? In the grey drawers at the front of the room with YOUR CLASS LABEL

5 Directions: Creating a functional pocket style portfolio
Fold large heavyweight paper in half (hamburger style) like a folder Cut two strips of duct tape long enough to cover the short sides of the paper Place 1/2 the width of the duct tape along the short edge of the paper Fold the other 1/2 of the duct tape (backwards) to secure both pieces of paper Cut the excess duct tape that is longer than the portfolio Make a 3”x5” block at the bottom right hand corner of the portfolio & clearly write: First & last name & class pd. (in sharpie)

6 Directions: Requirements on the portfolio
Name & class period in box in bottom right corner First & last name in block letters that go to a single vanishing point First name above vanishing point Last name below vanishing point Sides of letters show light source / have shading Face of block letters each have a different pattern

7 Vocabulary: HORIZON LINE: the visual point where the sky meets the land / water (eye level) VANISHING POINT: point on the horizon line where receding lines meet & can no longer be seen 1 POINT PERSPECTIVE: drawing method that uses a single vanishing point on a horizon line, objects recede into the distance & appear 3D ORTHAGONAL LINES: the lines that recede into the vanishing point PATTERN: a repetitive decorative design VALUE: an element of art that refers to the lightness or darkness of a color

8 Directions: creating block letters
Start by lightly drawing each capital letter with a bit of space between each one Outline the letter using hard edges & crisp angles Try this technique for the whole alphabet

9 Directions: making letters in 1 point perspective
Draw a dot for the vanishing point Draw orthogonal lines from the corners of the letter to the vanishing point Remember the letters are solid, so lines should go to the letter, but no through it

10 Directions: making letters in 1 point perspective
We don’t want the letters to go on forever, so we have to cut them off before the vanishing point Use the lines of the letter face as a reference to how the back of the letter should look Make the back of the letters & erase any extra orthogonal lines that go to the vanishing point Outline in sharpie when you finish letters

11 Directions: Adding value to your letters
Shade the sides of your letters based on your light source The sides facing your light source should be the lightest The sides farthest or blocked from the light source should be the darkest

12 Directions: Adding Pattern to your letter faces
Draw a different pattern on the face of each of your letters

13 Directions: Check work & add details
Check your work All required text? Block letters? Uses 1 point perspective? All letters show value from light source? All letters have a different pattern on the face IS IT NEAT & COMPLETE? Add a background or any additional designs or details you want… MAKE IT MORE YOU!
