4. Details About Our Program
SMC has three levels of ESL instruction
Beginning
Intermediate
Advanced
Classes are designed for adult learners who want to improve their English communication skills in order to get a better job, to enter college credit programs, or to be more active citizens in their community.

Integrated Skills: This course includes listening, speaking, reading and writing basic English. This class meets for 6 hours a week.
Listening/Speaking/Pronunciation – all levels: This course will focus on improvement od the students pronunciation and comprehension of English. This class meets 3 hours a week.
Reading/Writing: This course will focus on improving students’ English vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills. This class meets 3 hours per week.
Idioms/Prepositions/Vocabulary: This course will focus on learning basic English and begin engaging in simple dialogs and conversation that are applicable to a variety of real life situations. This class meets 3 hours per week.

6. Integrated Skills
This course includes listening, speaking, reading and writing basic English

7. Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation
This course will focus on improvement of the student’s pronunciation and comprehension of English

This course will focus on improving students’ English vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills.

9. Idioms, Prepositions, and Vocabulary
This course will focus on learning basic English and begin engaging in simple dialogs and conversations that are applicable to a variety of real life situations.

10. Citizenship Class: ESL 902
Prepare for the New Citizenship exam, interview and receive help with the N-400 application

11. How to Register for Classes
The class is open – register for classes in Bundy Rm 112
The class is closed/full – Go to instructor during the second week of class (or later) to see if there is space

12. Class Schedule The schedule is flexible for students
Courses are available in the morning, afternoon and Saturday.

13. Changing Classes
You can register anytime during the semester (Open Entry/Open Exit). As long as the class is open
If feel your class is not the correct level, check with your instructor or counselor about which level may be more appropriate for you
Go to Bundy Campus Room 112 to make any changes

14. Fees & Financial Aid SMC noncredit classes are FREE!!!
You may be asked to pay for textbooks, materials, and supplies that you will need to succeed in your class.($40-$50)
There is no financial aid available for noncredit courses books or supplies
There is no tuition for noncredit courses. However, a few courses include a fee for materials provided to students. Students are also responsible for the purchase of books and supplies
Federal Financial Aid is not available for noncredit classes. Noncredit classes are tuition free. Students are responsible for the purchase of books and supplies. Financial aid is not available for these materials.

15. Grades & Transfer Credit
You will not receive a grade for noncredit courses you attend
Noncredit courses do not transfer to another school or program, but they help prepare you to take credit college courses
Non-credit courses are available to members of the community, free of charge, and do not count toward the completion of a certificate or Associate degree. However, they follow the same curriculum approval process used for credit courses.
In general, credit courses are designed for students who are interested in earning college units towards a degree or certificate. Students who take credit courses receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) at the end of the semester.
Noncredit courses are classes offered through the Continuing Education. They are intended for students who want to gain general knowledge, learn a new skill, upgrade existing skills, or enrich their understanding about a wide range of topics. Noncredit classes are NOT applicable toward a degree.

16. Attendance
Attendance is important for successful learning and will be taken in each class
If you miss 2 consecutive classes you will be dropped
The more time and energy you put into your class, the faster you will learn English
