“If I were President” ...increase the level of interaction with Institutes across the globe, including more in developing countries and Asia. ...Modernise the exam system. ...(increase) soft skill training offered by the Institute. ...extend the President’s term to allow more time to better execute longer term strategic initiatives. ... Market the value of actuaries outside traditional areas.
4
What do we want to be? Council recently concluded that the aim of the Actuaries Institute is to build a strong actuarial profession and community that is in high demand across regulatory and non-regulatory roles in financial services and the broader economy.
5
What are the big obstacles in our way?
Globalisation of the actuarial profession. New work roles for members of the profession. Governance of the Actuaries Institute. Conduct risk. Education. The Actuaries Institute lack of scale.
6
Globalisation The globalisation of the profession is underway and is being driven by the expanding global footprint of the IFoA and the SOA.
7
New Areas of Work Work Area Fellows Students Life Insurance 28% 19%
Superannuation 9% 4% Data Analytics 2% 11%
8
Governance The Institute’s governance model can be summarised as:
Council has all the executive authority to manage and develop the Actuaries Institute within the terms of the Constitution, apart from the disciplinary process which is an independent function. Council devolves to HQ, the Presidential Committee and the Practice and Council Committees various functions subject to monitoring by Council.
9
Education To date the education model has consisted of:
Outsourcing of Part I and II exams to accredited universities. Inhouse Part III lectures and exams. Inhouse CPD programs predominately through Insights and Seminars.
10
Conduct Risk To date, the Actuaries Institute’s reputation has not been damaged, but given our prominent and statutory role in life, general and health insurance there is a high risk that some individual members could tarnish the standing of the profession.
11
Scale We are a relatively small profession.
We are much smaller than the IFoA and the SOA. Our scale impacts almost all of our activities, especially education, support for new areas of work or interest for members, and our ability to promote the brand ‘Actuary’.
12
What do we need to do? Think smart, and use other organisations’ scale where possible. Evolve a governance structure that is more appropriate to an expanding organisation. Support members working in new areas.
