3 Hypothalamus The hypothalamus links the nervous system to the endocrine system and maintains homeostasis. It produces hormones that govern body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, moods and sex drive. It controls the pituitary gland and other glands.

5 Alcohol affects the entire body
Alcohol affects the entire body. All systems are involved when alcohol is present. Alcohol is a nervous system depressant. How does this effect nerve impulse transmission? Remember that neurons communicate with each other by the release of neurotransmitters across synapses. Alcohol influences neurotransmitter activity. Certain neurotransmitters inhibit (slow down) brain activity (transmission of impulses) causing such effects as slow reaction time. Alcohol can also change the type of neurotransmitter released by a cell. sfsfsdf

6 Digestive system : stomach ulcers, pancreas, liver, kidney, irritable colon. Inability to absorb nutrients. Irritation of stomach lining = vomiting (on yourself at a party- gross and embarrassing! Circulatory system: Blood vessels becoming dilated, high blood pressure, increased body temperature but subsequent heat loss. Flushed (due to increased blood flow to skin) Liver Function: most alcohol is processed by the liver. (7oz/hour). Liver enzymes breakdown alcohol. Some people have more enzymes than others (why some can “hold” their liquor and others cannot?- can have a genetic role. Inherit different forms of enzyme. Alcohol disrupts the liver’s ability to breakdown fats. Fats can accumulate with heavy drinkers and lead to tissue damage(cirrhosis). Liver functions begin to fail and person can experience malnutrition, diabetes.
