Henry VIII and the Church
Henry VIII – King of England was a devout Catholic -wanted a son, only had one daughter w/ Catherine of Aragon (older than he was and from Spain) - in 1527 Catherine = 42 yrs old he thought she would be unable to have more kids – wanted a divorce - Church did not allow divorce, and would not annul the marriage because Charles V was Catherine’s nephew (declare illegal or not official)

Henry VIII cont. In 1529 Henry called a special session of Parliament to pass a law that ended Pope’s power in England = Reformation Parliament They did…England is now Protestant 1533 – Henry secretly married Anne Boleyn then had Parliament legalize his divorce from Catherine 1534 –Parliament voted to approve the Act of Supremacy- calling for the English people to take an oath recognizing the divorce and accepting Henry as head of the English Church, not the Pope Thomas More refused to take the oath, he was imprisioned in Tower of London then executed for treason

Henry VIII: More Wives, More Divorces or else…
Anne Boleyn – Daughter Elizabeth, then got in trouble- tried for treason and killed Jane Seymour- she had a son, Edward but then she died due to childbirth complications Anne of Cleves – German princess – he thought she was ugly – divorced her- no kids Catherine Howard- very young and very silly, no kids tried for treason – she was killed Catherine Parr - stayed married, no kids, Henry dies

Henry’s Heirs & the Church
Henry died in 1547 Edward became nine years old -advisers were very protestant, Edward was sickly died after just six years Mary (Catherine of Aragon’s daughter) became queen in 1553 “Bloody Mary” -very Catholic, England under Pope again –there were many protestant rebellions, many were killed - dies in 1558

Elizabeth I Elizabeth I (Anne Boleyn’s daughter) is made queen in 1558 in her early 20’s she is protestant In 1559 – she convinces Parliament to set up the Church of England (Anglican Church) as the only legal church in England She tried to combine aspects of both Catholicism and Protestantism to please as many as possible -services were still traditional and very catholic-like -priests were allowed to marry and preach in English

Elizabeth’s Challenges
Elizabeth was tolerant of her Catholic country-men, but many wanted Mary, Queen of Scots to be queen in stead Phillip the II of Spain, also wanted control of England England was relatively poor, wanted to invest in New World, it did improve economy, but did not enrich Elizabeth Her constant need for $$ often pitted her against Parliament

Elizabeth I’s Legacy She reigned for 45 years and is considered one of England’s best monarchs ( ) She was able to quell most of the Catholic / Protestant infighting and brought peace to the country She was a great patroness of the Arts She also sponsored many expeditions to the Americas
