3rd Grade ELA News Weeks of January 17th – January 20th Spelling Words: Sight words, Homophones, and academic vocabulary Sugar flour orbit Being bored position Leave board sphere Noun hair vet It’s hare Flower clear *Test on Friday, Jan. 20. Grammar: Compound Sentences, descriptive alliteration, Proper Nouns, Compound Words, Metaphor. Writing: Writing a biographical report on Sojourner Truth. Reading/Language/Spelling Main Selection: Sojourner Truth’s Step-Stomp Stride by Andrea Davis Pinkney & Brian Pinkney. Comprehension: We will find evidence to support what we find out about Sojourner Truth. We will summarize and tell the theme of the story. We will explain Sojourner’s character traits. *Comprehension checks will be made periodically during the week. Fluency: We will focus on Rate this week. *I will take a G1 fluency grade every Friday. Target Vocabulary: *Test on Friday, Jan. 20th. Shucking – removing the shucks from corn Hauling – pull or drag with effort or force Gleamed – shine brightly Mucked – to remove dirt from an area Quakers – a religious society of friends Abolitionists – a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially slavery Ignorance – lack of knowledge or information Privileges – special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. Reminders *Check and sign your child’s homework folder each night. *Practice fluency each night for 1 minute, three times. *Poem (sent home in folder last week) will be recited before the class on or before January 31. Please practice with your child. Extra time will not be given. If you have misplaced the poem, you can find a copy on our website under “poems.”
