2 The growth of cinema in the 1920s
The cinema was the most exciting development of the time and every small town had one. It influenced people in a number of ways – in terms of fashion and the way in which people behaved. It was a popular pastime and a way of escaping from the world’s problems after the horrors of World War 1 Cinemas were also luxurious places where people could socialise and get there easily in their cars. This is a silent film from the 1920s

3 Silent movies Silent movies were largely black and white and were bringing in millions of dollars. They were usually accompanied by music that was played on a piano organ. Some famous examples of silent movies include: Nosferatu Metropolis The kid

4 Studios Major movie companies were opening including Paramount, Warner Borthers and MGM. They produced hundreds of films a year including detetive stories, comedies and romantic comedies. The now world famous iconic Hollywood sign was originally Hollywoodland and was built in

5 Stars The movies made the actors and actresses household names and very rich The Italian Rudolph Valentino was a very popular sex symbol. When he died suddenly in 1926 some of his fans killed themselves. Charlie Chaplin was very influential and the founder of a film company. Actresses like Clara Bow and Gloria Swanson had a huge impact on the way women behaved and dressed.

6 Talkies In 1927 an average of 60 million Americans went to the cinema every week. This increase was partly due to the introduction of audio films known as talkies. Al Johnson, starring in The Jazz Signer marked the beginning of this period. The 1920s was also the era of cartoons – such as Mickey Mouse, created by Walt Disney.
