1 The effects of different technologies
Concept one The effects of different technologies

2 Effects of Technologies
Technology gives us an increasing level of control of outdoor environments/experiences. Innovations that have changed our experiences include; Materials and clothing Communication and navigation Information Technology Transport and Infrastructure Activity-specific equipment Safety equipment

3 These innovations allow us to access outdoor venues that would otherwise be too difficult to reach without technological assistance. It can provide us with the means to participate in a wide range of environmental conditions or enable us to enjoy year round participation, despite climatic variation. This has an influence on our relationships with outdoor environments.

4 How has technology changed?

5 Old style tent New style tent
How would these two different tents influence people going hiking? Do they make people more comfortable? Are they easier to carry?

6 How does technology affect experiences/relationships?

8 Does technology bring us closer to outdoor environments, or does it separate us?

9 Bunurong Coast example
Surfing at locations such as Smith’s Beach - Phillip Island Surfing technology has changed: Thick, yet light and flexible wetsuits make the water bearable all year round, allowing a greater amount of surfers to catch waves, all throughout the year and at a greater range of locations. Perceptions: environment is now seen as accessible, as a playground because we can control out comfort. Interactions: increase in the amount of surfers in the water, especially in high tourist seasons. Positive Impact: allows for more people to experience the outdoor environment, this could lead to an appreciation and willingness to contribute to its protection. Negative Impact: increased pressure on the coastal environments as more are now accessible and overuse can lead to impacts such as dune erosion from increased foot traffic. Decreased experience for surfers as there is competition for waves.

10 Alpine Region Example Downhill skiing at locations such as Falls Creek and Mt Buller Ski development: Ski’s are parabolic and easier to ride, gore-tex/waterproof clothing allows people to keep warm and dry and ski for a long time. Perceptions: the Alpine environment was once seen as an adversary, yet is not seen as a playground/gymnasium to enjoy. Interactions: humans can learn to ski easier and in comfort, meaning they ski for longer and more people are able to do so. Positive Impact: more people are able to experience Alpine environments, this can lead to a greater connection to them and willingness to help protect them. Negative Impact: native vegetation is cleared to create ski runs, roads, shops and accommodation, causing a loss of habitat for native Alpine species.
