1 Seeing the Familiar as Strange
Think of a situation that you experience often or everyday (like taking a bus or sitting in class). Now see the familiar in that situation as strange and describe any sociology you see going on.

2 Student Responses: A lot of days I go home after school & watch tv for a few hours, but I find now that it’s pretty weird – watching a screen for that long. If you are sitting in class, you tend to be quiet and think about your every action, but at home you can relax and do what seems comfortable.

3 Student Responses: Walking down the hall, everyone walks on their right, just like cars on a road. Walking down the wrong side is frowned upon because you run into people and cause traffic jams. Going to the movies is strange when you think about how you are paying to sit in ordinary chairs, in a room full of strangers, to see a movie which will come out later and you could watch it at home.

4 Student Responses: What tells us to go to school, stay in class and learn? Why do we sit in rows and listen and when the bell rings we are like Pavlov’s dogs and change classes? I wear contacts and that’s weird because everyday I stick a plastic circle into my eye. This occurs because of society making people believe that glasses are something to be made fun of.

5 Student Responses: Driving the car…the presence of the yellow line allows us to not think twice about a car driving towards us at 45mph. Straightening my hair. I regularly burn my hair because having tame hair is more socially acceptable and I get a better reaction from people. People placing themselves in the exact same seat every day .

6 Student Responses: The idea of using bathrooms where it is occupied by more than one individual. While it is pretty clear that using the bathroom is a very private matter, our society is accustom to this idea of community bathrooms. School: Shuffling room to room to sit in an uncomfortable desk, listening to a typically boring teacher (ouch!) give a lesson on something most students have no interest in nor will they use the information given in their life

7 Student Responses: Pledging allegiance to the American flag…saying an oath to a flag every day could be seen as strange. It’s not as though anything really happens if you do or don’t say the oath after all. But pledging allegiance means different things for different people and it shows in their behavior every morning

8 Other “strange” behavior at concerts?
The fandom over one person is weird, how we react to celebrities Drinking because what’s the point of going to a concert and getting so drunk that you can’t remember it the next day? Screaming and wearing weird clothes Getting oddly close to people Singing out loud to songs. What is the point of trying to listen if you are just singing the lyrics yourself? You are blocking out what you paid to listen to. Hooking up/PDA

9 Other “strange” behavior at concerts?
Cheering when anyone says anything Waiting hours for tickets Begging for encores Showing up early and waiting around for the show to start is an odd behavior. We don’t show up to classes in school early and sit in the front row for a better view. Painting your body Doing drugs in public
