7 What’s Next? CHALK TALK WALK
What did we learn about the current state of Healthful Living Education across North Carolina? What’s Next? CHALK TALK WALK Originally developed by Hilton Smith, Foxfire Fund; adapted for the NSRF by Marylyn Wentworth. Chalk Talk is a silent way to do reflection, generate ideas, check on learning, develop projects or solve problems. It can be used productively with any group—students, faculty, workshop participants, committees. Because is it done completely in silence, it gives groups a change of pace and encourages thoughtful contemplation. It can be an unforgettable experience. Middle Level students absolutely love it—it’s the quietest they’ll ever be! Format Time: Varies according to need; can be from 5 minutes to an hour. Materials: Chalk board and chalk or paper roll (chart paper) on the wall and markers. Process 1. The facilitator explains VERY BRIEFLY that chalk talk is a silent activity. No one may talk at all and anyone may add to the chalk talk as they please. You can comment on other people’s ideas simply by drawing a connecting line to the comment. It can also be very effective to say nothing at all except to put finger to lips in a gesture of silence and simply begin with #2. 2. The facilitator writes a relevant question(s) in a circle on the board. Questions: What are your future plans for implementing the Healthful Living Essential Standards? What issues are of concern? How has implementation of the new standards changed the way you work with colleagues? Where is your favorite place to go for vacation? List one great thing happening in Healthful Living Education in your school or district. 3. The facilitator either hands a piece of chalk to everyone, or places many pieces of chalk at the board and hands several pieces to people at random. 4. People write as they feel moved. There are likely to be long silences—that is natural, so allow plenty of wait time before deciding it is over. 5. How the facilitator chooses to interact with the Chalk Talk influences its outcome. The facilitator can stand back and let it unfold or expand thinking by: • circling other interesting ideas, thereby inviting comments to broaden • writing questions about a participant comment Walk around the gallery of posters to collect ideas and problem solve

16 Using Newspapers to Teach Healthful Living Education
THE WORLD’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER - Since 1879 Newspapers Are Filled With Health Messages Newspapers can be a helpful tool when teaching health content and literacy skills. Using newspapers is a great way to infuse current and in many cases local health issues and topics into your instruction. Click here to find information related to ordering newspapers for educational purposes in NC schools. It is important to note that newspapers can be accessed in print and online now for classroom use. It will be important to become familiar with the newspaper you intend to use so that you know which day of the week is most likely to contain health topics. Is there a Health section that runs on certain days of the week? Most newspapers include Food sections and grocery flyers as a part of the Wednesday paper which creates endless possibilities for integrating nutrition education. Advice columns may be limited to one day a week which might include health topics as well.

20 Summer Institutes

21 Feedback from Summer Institute 2011
Team Time needs to be earlier in the day Process Time was too much content Team Time needs to be an extended period of time for differentiated planning Our LEA/Charter needs our own space to work

22 Summer Institutes 2012 – The Vision
Differentiated Approach – Meet LEAs/ Charters where they are Provide true “work time” with one LEA/ Charter per room with one DPI facilitator Equip facilitator with tools, questions, and information to support the LEA/Charter

23 SI Sharing Session 1.What are the big ideas or concepts you will take back from your content sessions? 2.How does this content area prepare students to be future ready? 3.How does this area connect to other content areas? 4.What are the implications for meeting the needs of all learners as related to this content area?

26 DPI Update Health/Physical Education/Athletics
Health Policies to Rules CPR Bill HIV Funding Cuts Healthy Schools UNCW June 18-20 Licensure Reminder Spring PELT April 12th – 14th in Black Mountain National Physical Education Institute July 30th – August 3rd in Asheville Middle/Junior High School Athletics Manual NCHSAA & NCDPI Collaboration Efforts All of our policies have begun the process of being converted to rules, which makes them stronger documents. The Health/PE/Athletic policies will most likely go before the Board for conversion to rules in the summer. There are a couple of groups trying to get a bill passed that would require CPR certification as a graduation requirement. This bill did not pass last year, but it is being revisited this year. Our Healthy Schools section gets the vast majority of their funding from CDC grants. Those funds have been reduced this year, and this will reduce the amount of HIV trainings being offered. The Healthy Schools Institute will be held at UNCW from June Registration and more information can be found on the HealthySchools.org site. Remember that the new licensure requirements for Health and PE teachers go into effect July 1, 2012.
