Presentation on theme: "What is the man sweeping up?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What is the man sweeping up?
WHY? Why are the people in the background so fascinated to watch? The man is sweeping up deutsche marks (bank notes). This is because money has become worthless to the extent that people are just throwing it away. People are fascinated because this scene is really unusual. As the hyperinflation crises worsened people used money for various things other than method of payment.

2 The Big Picture: The rise of the Nazis
Key Vocabulary Republic Constitution Armistice Treaty Uprising Depression Propaganda Today we can tick off our first key question! How did the Weimar Republic recover in the years ? THE RISE OF THE NAZIS Recap of the overall big picture from lesson 1. What problems did the Weimar Government face in the years ? . Why did support for the Nazis grow in the period ?

3 Todays Lesson Key Vocabulary Republic Constitution Armistice Treaty Uprising Depression What problems did the Weimar Government face in the years ? Recall the different political threats Weimar survived and assess to what extent they were a real threat Today’s lesson title and objectives. Needs to be recorded by students. Recall the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and the hyperinflation crisis . Understand the relationships between threats to Weimar in the year

4 The problems facing the Weimar Government in 1923 were caused by the Treaty of Versailles” – Do you agree? Explain your answer. (16 marks) Today you are going to answer this 16 mark exam question – your biggest challenge yet! You will need to show understanding of everything you have looked at so far in this unit. But you can do it – so first, lets plan! The question in the box is a genuine 16 mark past exam question. It will require students to draw upon all of the knowledge they have so far, and where possible show relationships between factors.

5 The problems facing the Weimar Government in 1923 were caused by the Treaty of Versailles” – Do you agree? Explain your answer. (16 marks) ALWAYS look for dates in exam questions! They define where our argument will start and/or end Identify the key words and commands in the Question! Here we’re looking at problems! And here we’re given a point to argue! Make sure you understand the skill needed to answer the question. We need to EXPLAIN, therefore we need to avoid telling a story!

6 Were ALL the problems Weimar had down to the Treaty of Versailles?
YES! The hyperinflation crisis can be directly linked to the treaty because… NO! E.g. The Spartacist uprising happened BEFORE the treaty was signed!...

7 It’s time to plan our answer!! So how do we go about this….?
There’s many ways we could plan an answer. But this is a complex question, so it is important that our plan tries to show the relationship between all the factors we want to include in our answer. They’re not everyone’s cup of tea – but the best way to plan a big answer like this is with a mind-map, which really allows us to see the relationship between different relevant factors. There is an example of a good mind-map on the next slide.

9 Level/Mark What I did…. LEVEL 1 1 - 4 marks I DESCRIBED ONE point which was relevant to the question; such as The Treaty of Versailles or the Hyperinflation crisis. The level of description I included has decided my mark. Basic details are enough to get me 1 or 2 marks. A detailed description will get me 3 or 4 marks. OR I listed several points which were relevant to the question but gave little or no explanation about the events or their importance. (Shopping list answer) LEVEL 2 5 - 8 marks I was able to identify one OR more event which was relevant to the question and could EXPLAIN them in some detail. If my answer was awarded 7 or 8 marks this means I was also able to make some LINKS between Weimar’s problems and the Treaty of Versailles – although these links may not be fully explained. LEVEL 3 9 - 12 marks I identified several problems which the Weimar Government suffered during the period and was able to clearly explain how the Treaty of Versailles was linked to each of these problems. If I got 12 marks then I was also able to say what else contributed to Weimar’s problems, such as the behaviour and reactions of the Government themselves. LEVEL 4 marks As Level 3 – but I was also able to make a judgement about to what extent the Treaty of Versailles was to blame for the problems facing the Weimar Government in 1923.

10 Plenary: This can be done through any method you see fit so long as TILT time is built in to the last part of the lesson. Today I learnt that….?
